Another Death Crossing Austell Road
The driver is not expected to be charged in Friday night's collision south of Marietta.
A woman was killed late Friday night while crossing Austell Road south of Marietta.
Wendy Nolan, 39, of Austell was struck by a red 2004 Toyota Corolla south of Floyd Road just before 10:40 p.m., Cobb County police spokesman Officer Mike Bowman reported. He said she stepped into the path of the northbound Toyota, which was driven by Jasmine Hamm, 24, of Austell.
Nolan was pronounced dead at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
Hamm was not hurt and is not expected to be charged, Bowman said.
Police ask anyone with information on the fatal crash to call 770-499-3987.

It was the third serious car-pedestrian collision and second fatality in two days in the southeastern quarter of Cobb County.
Former McEachern football coach Charles Collins, 66, of Smyrna was killed just before 7 p.m. Thursday when he was hit by a white 2004 Chevrolet Silverado while trying to cross Atlanta Road in Smyrna.
Preston Lee Hester, 62, of Greensboro, NC, was seriously injured Thursday about 10 p.m. when he was hit crossing Powder Springs Road at Oxford Road by a green 2002 Toyota Camry. He was taken to Kennestone.
No charges are expected in either of those accidents.
Friday’s fatal collision was about four miles south of the accident that injured Hester and eight miles west of the crash that killed Collins.
It also was four miles south of the area along Austell Road where 4-year-old A.J. Newman was killed in April 2010 while trying to cross without a crosswalk. That death led to the conviction of A.J.’s mother, Raquel Nelson, for misdemeanor second-degree vehicular homicide for failing to stop him from running into the street.
Nelson is awaiting a retrial in that case, but it brought to light how unfriendly Cobb County roads are to pedestrians. Funding issues have prevented the addition of crosswalks along Austell Road.

As I understand it, every case involves pedestrians not using proper crossing safety. How about if the media uses their resources to get the message out about the dangers of illegally crossing busy roadways?

Hi, Amckrc: I think you just made that very point, and thank you for it. The flip side is the claim that many Cobb roads are unnecessarily difficult to cross legally. All we in the media can say for certain is that people have died in the past week, the police are not blaming the drivers, and it is safer to cross legally than illegally.

This area is very hostile to pedestrians. The street and road expansion occurred without any consideration for pedestrians. Walk a mile in their shoes and I guarantee you that you will be walking on the side of a street with NO sidewalk and crossing intersections with NO stoplight delay for pedestrians.

I used to traverse Austell Rd on a daily basis, I always went the speed limit or below because of individuals and families running across the street. One man crossed in front of me while reading a magazine, never looked up once. Although I encourage reading, that is very dangerous. I don't think more lines painted would help much. I would suggest pedestrian bridges to make the road safer for everyone.

People need to learn to jay walk safely. Go to youtube and check out people crossing the road in India, Vietnam and other countries like that.There is a relaxed attitude as they cross. People die in crosswalks to and there is more happening, like cars turning right, turning left, going through and running red lights, so cross wisley. Stop signs and traffic light to no guarantee for saftey. Using your brain is. I don't agree with this woman being threatened with 3 years of prison. She should take a course in safe road crossing and talk to young ppl about her experience to help prevent ppl esp. kids being killed in traffic.

Why don't you add signs that say "Yield to pedestrians" or a crosswalk?
