Cobb Officer Fatally Shoots Woman
The 53-year-old Marietta resident was assaulting the officer with a knife and handgun, a police spokesman says.
Updated 9 a.m. Monday
The woman killed Sunday is the woman involved in mailing the threatening packages in April, the New York Post reported.
Jameela Barnette was indicted and arrested last month on federal charges related to mailing a package that was a hoax weapon of mass destruction, the Post said.
A federal judge released her without posting bond, the Post added
Original Report
A Cobb County police officer fatally shot a woman at an apartment just outside the Marietta city limits this morning.
The woman, Jameela Cecila Barnette, 53, answered a knock at a door at the Bexley apartment complex in the 300 block of Penny Lane by charging out with a knife and a handgun, police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said in a news release.
Barnette assaulted and injured the officer who had knocked on the door, Pierce said. The officer shot her with his service handgun to stop the Christmas Day attack shortly after 11 a.m.
Barnette was dead at the scene.
The officer, whose name was not released, was treated for injuries to his arm at the apartment complex. He did not need to go to a hospital.
Cobb police went to the complex, which is within 100 feet of the city of Marietta, in response to an alarm. Officers were notified of a second, panic alarm at the same apartment as they arrived.
The internal affairs unit of the county Public Safety Department and the police Crimes Against Persons Unit are investigating the shooting. The officer is on administrative leave during the investigation.
We don’t know whether the dead woman is the same Jameela Barnette who made bizarre news in April.
That Barnette, a Muslim grandmother from Marietta, admitted sending a pig’s foot with an anti-Semitic note to New York Congressman Peter King and mailing cheap perfume, an anti-Semitic note and a Curious George doll with a Jewish star on a label reading “bound for Auschwitz” to a New York state Sen. Greg Ball, Fox TV Channel 23 in Albany, NY, and other media outlets reported.
King's website includes a New York Post article in which Barnette says she sent the packages to protest hearings on terrorism that she saw as anti-Muslim.
Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call 770-499-3945.

I am the brother of the deceased, I pray that the officer involved finds some type of peace with knowing he took a life out of fear for his own life. It is truly disheartning to know that my loved one will no longer be with us, but my family and I hold no anonymosity towards that officer. RIP Jacci, WE LOVE YOU

Bennie, I'm so sorry about your sister. Did she have some sort of mental problems? And I am glad to hear that your family is not blaming the officer. What a horrible thing to happen on Christmas Day, or any day really. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family as well as the officer and his family. Peace.

I am one of the sisters of the deceased. I am so sad that my sister had to leave us this way. I am also very sad and dismayed that the officer that was involved in this tragic incident has to go through this. I pray that I and my other brothers and sisters, as well as the officer will find some peace with this incident through GOD. Bye-Bye.....Jackie. I loved you dearly and always will. Crazy, angry, bitter, Muslim woman in a Christian nation. Not a good combination.

Very sorry for y'all's loss. Please excuse the rude reactions you might hear and read, as those are not indicative of the compassion many of us will feel, both for your family and for the officer.

It seems like this woman had a mental issue. Thank goodness the police officer was not more seriously injured.

Although I feel sympathy for the family and this obviously crazy woman, her actions were abhorrent. It is amazing to me that this woman could have complained about racism and sent someone a doll that read, "destination Auschwitz". These aren't the sentiments of a decent human being.
