Elementary Students Visit Southern Poly

A group of boys from a gender-based class at learned about video game design Wednesday at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta.

The students, who are in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, are part of "H.I.T. Squad" of teacher Lazetta Hankerson, aka the "Hankerson Institute of Technology."

Their visit to the Southern Poly Gaming Department included a tour of the facilities and the basics of computer gaming with faculty member Dr. Jon Preston. 

The focus was on games involving the study of the solar system. The questions involved included: How do the Earth and its Moon move; what objects are in the Solar System; and, what can we see in the sky?

Marka Ormbsy and Robin Daniel of Southern Poly's Tech Matters program orchestrated the visit, which included stops in the computer lab and the mechatronics engineering lab (robotics).

This is a continuation of Brumby's involvement in Southern Poly’s Games-for-Learning Project, which is designed to promote STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

At Brumby, Hankerson uses themes of Vipers, Gladiators, Aviators and All-Stars to inspire her students toward science and technology subjects. Last year, she invited Southern Poly instructors to teach a lesson at the East Cobb school.

She said her goal is to continue exposing students to any area involving STEM.
