Life University Founder Sid Williams Dies

The MDJ reported he passed away Thursday morning.

Dr. Sid Williams, the founder of Marietta's Life University, has died.

The Marietta Daily Journal reported Thursday that Williams, who suffered a stroke late last year, passed away this morning, and that in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to The B. J. Palmer Historic Home Foundation.

Funeral arrangements were to be announced.

Williams, who was 84, transformed the institution he founded as Life Chiropractic School on Barclay Drive in Marietta into the fully-fledged Life University, enrolling at its peak nearly 3,500 students in the 1990s.

While it remains the largest chiropractic school in the world, offering a doctorate degree in the field, Life also offers a master's degrees in health sciences, as well as undergraduate programs in the sciences, business administration and computer information management.

Life also had a well-rounded varsity athletics program, and was best-known for its men's rugby, track and field and cross country teams.

But major operational problems at Life in 2002 led to the disbanding of most sports and a temporary loss of its academic accreditation by the Council on Chiropractic Education, events which led to Williams' retirement.

East Cobb Patch contributor Tim Langley, a chiropractor who attended Life, called Williams "a warrior and a lover of people and humanity."

Williams grew up in Atlanta and played football for the legendary coach Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech.

A member of the Georgia Tech Athletic Hall of Fame, Williams hired former Yellow Jackets basketball standout Roger Kaiser to be a coach and athletic director at Life, positions he held until the athletics program was discontinued.

Kaiser is now the athletic director at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy in East Cobb.

A donors' profile on the Georgia Tech athletic website said Williams was inspired to study chiropractic care because of spinal injuries he suffered playing football.

He and his wife Nell studied chiropractic at the Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa. They moved back to the Atlanta area and began Life in 1974.

He was a huckster. He would have students attend mandatory assemblies where they would chant "money" "money" "money".

I attended Life Chiropractic College from 1986 through 1990, not once did Dr. Sid Williams mention money. He discussed how the body has inherent healing powers and how our role as doctors of chiropractic would be to convey this universal understanding to the world. It was Dr. Sid Williams who allowed me to be reported in the newspapers of how I helped adults and children where medicine couldn't.

Dr Sid Williams was a visionary. No one did more to help chiropractors than Dr Williams. To call him a huckster is wrong and disrespectful. You are a coward. I bet if he were around you wouldn't say that to his face!

I was president of the Student Council while at life in early 1980's I did not always see I to Eye with Sid, and he tried to suspend me from school when I applied to transfer to Cleveland ( Maryland at that time was not allowing Life grads to sit for the boards) but all in all he did a lot for the profession. I use to have as clients some of the older GPs and Internists around Kennestone. One of my favorites, practiced well into his 70's use to refer to Sid as "Satan". He was more tolerant, but not much, of DOs. Old school thought DC and DO were snake oil.

For over 125 years, in a huge unrelenting and illegal effort, MD's tried to run DO's and DC's out of town. Eventually the DO's threw in the towel and agreed to practice like MD's (the number one cause of death in the U.S.), whilst Dr. Sid Williams helped octors of Chiropractic prevailed to become the second largest primary care doctor in the U.S. Now 40,000,000 Americans recieve good and necessary chiropractic care. President Obama, almost every professional and amateur athlete, actor, and many politicians recieve chiropractic care...a safe and effective method to allow the musculoskeletal and nervous systems to function properly. Our body's organs recieve their nerve feed from the CNS and autonomic chains, which happen to run in and along the side of the spine. Chiropractic!

Buffy are you going to believe an MD knows more about getting a person healthy and keeping them that way than a chiropractor? Get real go to the chiropractor or go be part of the doctors that ltierally kill 100,000's of people /year. Your choice!

The Williams were pressured to leave due to medi-practors who issued credentialing (CCE), trying to force the school to adopt mixing of straight chiropractic and medicine as a means to maintain credentialing. Eventually a federal judge returned credentialing to Life University.

I had a long discussion with Don Harrison, DC before he died. Another chiropractic genius, like Sid, and he gave me the whole inside scoop about the whole ordeal. The CCE deliberately attempted to close down Life, with complete intent to purchase and take over the school for financial and power gain. He was then forced to retire, all of the enrolled students had to re- enrolI in other schools, then turned around and sued poor Sid. From what I learned from Don Harrison that day, it is a true sin that these CCE members are not in prison rotting. It is a bigger shame that most chiropractors sit and do nothing. The CCE has proposed new changes that will FOREVER CHANGE CHIROPRACTIC, WEAKENING IT, MEDICALIZING IT, and Chiropractors only have till 1/3/12 to respond before it can not be changed. You are poison, I feel bad for your parents! Sid was an absolute Genius, Scholar, and TRUE CHIROPRACTOR, and has given more to society in one day than you will in your whole life. HE GAVE LIFE TO SO MANY. This comes from a Palmer Grad, another True ChiropracTOR. I'm sorry that some complain about his obligated lectures. I would have loved to have been able to experience every single one of them. May God Welcome Sid with the welcome of a decorated Saint, my hat is off to him. He was treated unfairly by some evil players in life. You are very disrespectful. I appreciate all of the increadible Genius Chiropractors that have brought Truth and Virtue to our profession.

Ignorant comments made with no point of reference. The man kept chiropractic alive and led the largest professional school in the world and has indirectly saved thousands of lives.

Do you really believe a 70 something MD, educated 50 years ago, knows the first thing about health?

Have some decency and respect for someone that made a difference during the chiropractic's time of grief.

Life College built itself on the blood of students racking up loan debt. When students defaulted on their loans, the American taxpayer got to eat it. http://www.chirobase.org/03Edu/loan.html Meanwhile, Sid was at one time the highest paid president of any college in the U.S. This man left a legacy of anti-science quackery and debt for so many who attended his school.

My point of reference was ground zero. I watched his television commercials in the 1970s and actually worked there at one time. I stayed informed on all of the controversy. Google the Wiliams and Kimbrough families for sordid details. He worked to put himself in the limelight.

I know about the mandatory pep rallies where he held up dollar bills and had the students chanting "money". That's what it's all about. He left town in shame. He wasn't an MD he was a DC. He had an academic degree for a quasi science practice.

Quasi Science Practice? No chiropractors are not MD's, just like Naturopaths, Osteopaths, Acupuncturists and Herbalists are not MD"s ... but they all have their well informed and scientific base in their own filed of health care. So, are you saying that the ONLY health care professionals who have any basis of validity are MD's? Who is uneducated here?

Hidden not that far beneath his chirovangelism was a strong motivation of greed illustrated by a chant created by Williams—the infamous “Money Hum” that he enthusiastically led students to repeat at his weekly mandatory seminars on campus:

Start imagining yourself ultra, ultra, ultra wealthy. Just see bales and piles of money, just everywhere. Gold or diamonds or whatever it is turns you on… Start down at the bottom and get you a handful of it. In your mind’s eye, say Mmmmmmooonnneeeyyy!!!

Pointing fingers does nothing to enhance your credibility or bolster your case for pity. This article is about a gentleman who made chiropractic a career and chose the educational arena to make his contribution. The point is that Williams didn't contribute to the profession. He profited from it. He had to resign so that Life could get back it's accredidation. No death is a glad event. But unfortunately he made enemies and was strongly disliked by many. I told a sibling about his death. A sibling that knew about the school and even dated several Life students. "No love lost, as far as I'm concerned!" was the response I got.

The Flexner Report had no bearing on Life. It was the Williams family mismanagement/unprofessionalism that caused it to temporarily lose accreditation. Then there were the dueling lawsuits. But they all had to step aside for the school to get it back. And students got caught in the crossfire. I understood their outrage then and I understand it now. The Williams family caused harm to people.

He inspired folks from all walks of life and helped them derive great satisfaction by having productive careers enabling others to experience an improved quality of life. Can a man do better? The money hum was just fun..... still is. For what it's worth, I remember Dr. Sid saying that money was not the root of evil rather the love of money was. He facilitated a whole lot of love and empowered a lot of folks to share the love. Steven D. Erde, DC

Each person may have their own opinions on Dr. SId and that is perfectly ok. However, what DR. SID has done for Chiropractic and chiropractors around the world is unique. No one in any professions has done so much for their own profession as Dr. Sid for chiropractic and us chiropractors.
People like to criticise and in general are negative and they see the world that way. No one is perfect, we all have done some wrong things in one time of our life but you must be proud of yourself if you can do more right things than wrongs things. I feel Dr. Sid has done more rights than the few things that people complained about him he was a man that has a philosophy that many other human beings continue and will continue for many centuries to come. Viva Dr. SID.

It's not funny that many people seem to remember better negative press rather than positive press. Too many positive articles have been attributed to Dr. Sid Williams. Because he nurtured a natural means to achieve and maintain health (chiropractic), Having realized that people want chiropractic, Organized Medicine and its pimp, Big Pharma, felt compelled to launch their all or nothing assault upon Dr. Sid and chiropractic, culminating in 1989, when a federal court found the AMA guilty of conspiracy to eliminate chiropractic (Dr. Chester Wilks vs AMA). Chiropractic!

No one FORCES a student to take on a student loan. It's a CHOICE made BY THE STUDENT. There are many who take the maximum student loan per semester because they CAN, not because it is necessary. There are many who kept their loans to a minimum and worked part and full-time and minumised their expenses to attain their dream of being a Chiropractior and helping the multitudes suffering needlessly because Medicine keeps stringing them on with ineffective care. Just because a student has no will power, and is so greedy to take the maximum then squander it (I've seen it first hand) while at school is not the school founder or administration's fault. Its THEIR OWN and should stop belly-aching and blaming everyone but THEMSELVES!

When we were there as students, in the 80's, there were plenty of things i thought were 'wrong', Like no therapy courses, no credit for activator courses and plenty more; all because of his personal philosophy rather than considering the best overall education of the students. As a 2001 graduate I had the opportunity to meet Sid and I can say he was very unique and his stories were also. Doesn't matter if you liked or disliked the man, please stop speaking ill of a human being that passed away. If it was one of your family members and people spoke of them like some are speaking of Sid here you would be enraged with anger. The man built a highly profitable school, made lots of money and was successful. That is what this country is about, capitalism. As far as the DC's that complain they were robbed and they can't pay off their school loans, that is true for the majority of the grads in this country. Sid had a way of speaking to people and getting them to listen, maybe the whiners on this site should take a page out of Sids book and learn how to speak to people and get them to understand what you are trying to say and you too could become successful. Stop blaming others for your failures. Grow up and have some compassion for a fellow human being that just passed away. The sooner you learn that when you treat people the right way and give them honostly answers the quicker you will see your practice grow, not through gimicks, but through solid referrals of your patients. RIP Sid and lets just pray that we as Chiropractors can continue to advance in the field of healthcare with solid science and philosophy.

I am a 1995 graduate of Life College (before it became a University). I attended assembly and was always fascinated as Dr. Sid would lecture. He would appear to go off in a rambling tangent and I would think, ok he is loosing his mind. But then miraculously he would bring his points around full circle and we would all have an Ah Hah moment, while thinking, How does he do that?! This is one of the many positive memories I have of my time at Life. Oh yes there were plenty of not so positive memories too but as he used to say "Keep the big things big and the small things small". He said a lot of things at those assemblies that have helped me through life after Life and I am greatful for all the jewels of wisdom he handed out. I know I sound like a worshiper of Sid but I don't think I was. In fact his recent death has made me think of things I hadn't remembered in years! As I continue to pay my student loans every month (yes almost 18 years later) I don't have bitter thoughts about Dr Sid or Life College, I am thankful that I can live a comfortable life, support a loving family and help as many people as I can get my hands on. RIP Dr Sid.

I love sid Williams and what he stood for. When man becomes aware, humble, and obedient to the innate within then and only then will his presence prevail and success will follow. He helped facilitate that for me and had a profound impact on humanity. He will continue to live on through those who live him.

I hope he rots in Hell for leaving so many of us defaulting our student loans. Chiropractic is a horrible business model...supply and demand drives every business and all the graduates are fighting over the same 8% of the population. Wake up! This profession is a scam.

The Cult of Chiropractic. In the 70s & 80s you couldn't swing a bat in Marietta/Smyrna without hitting five Life students. Knew lots of them. Subluxations. No vacinations. Can I give you an "adjustment" to meet my requirements? Chiro offices on every corner. Students coming from every part of the US. # 1 student default rate in the country. Money, money, money. Gotta have life time "maintenance". Money, money, money. "I'm going to open an office and make lots of money." It was the Life Mantra. Money, money, money.

All those chiro offices that were popping up like mushrooms after a heavy rain have slowly disappeared. Life even shifted it's focus to other academic degrees. It sucked on the teat of student loans until it ran dry. Left many students in financial ruin.

It is you and I who must take that 8% who presently utilize chiropractic and turn that into 100% who recieve chiropractic care. Dr. Sid Williams helped bring us to 8%, now how far are you going to bring chiropractic? Though chiropractic is only 130 years old, it's an infant in the publics eye. In DD Palmers own words: People are brought up in a medicine closet, the AMA their tin gods.... Go out "there" Informed, go out there and give chiropractic!

To all the naysayers and negative people: a legend has passed and you quibble about your woes you, yourself are responsible for. I spent a tremendous amount of time with a tremendous human. He loved people. His vision created more than HALF of the practicing chiropractors in the states. This translates to MILLIONS of people receiving chiropractic care. You will be forgotten by the end of the week whereas Dr. Sid Williams will be remember forever.

Dr. Sid was man of Vision and unrelenting committment who has, through his successful graduates, indirectly impacted millions of people in America and a growing number of suffering people now all over the world, because he wasn't afraid to stand on principle and put his total energy behind that Mission. I was student Council President in those early years of "Life" and know for a fact this is one very controversial character, but in no way does any of these detrators' opinions diminish the greatness of Sid's accomplishments. This world sits in a better place because of this ONE MAN. An imperfect man but a true leader, one of the few true of this amazinf profession. God be with you Dr. Sid. Love and support for all the suriving family and friends, which number in the thousands. I want to offer a prayer of thanks on behalf of all the people who suffer less disability, who can now work and support their families, who did not suffer the cost and indignation of needless surgery. What this world needs is another Sid Williams to continue his legacy. Amen and God Bless.

More power to what you posted...Dr. Sid Williams could have just opened the several clinics to serve good and necessary chiropractic to the multitude. In addition to this he doused himself in great debt and uncertaintity by inventing then nurturing the greatest and largest chiropractic school in the world. Chiropractic!

Former graduate

As a former Life graduate, I'm thankful for the conservative care aspect that Chiropractic brings to patient care, but far too many at Life were cheered on to be very dogmatic concerning serious health issues even to the point of adversely affecting patient health. I remember the class discussions concerning various serious health issues with my more vocal, dogmatic classmates insisting that all that was needed was to be adjusted above all. An example was a case in which a discussion concerning malignant hypertension led one of my classmates to constantly shout out "adjust him" and "don't call 911" over and over despite the scenario being a patient with systolic BP of well over 240. Another teacher (who Dr. Williams supported) insisted that if he was properly adjusted, he could not get HIV even if given an injection. While I respect what Dr. Williams was able to accomplish, I also think a balanced view of his life and his school's education is necessary. My personal viewpoint is that I am thankful for my Chiropractic education at Life but that view is also very tempered by my memories of the severe dogmatism and cultlike environment that the school advocated.

You say "cultlike". I say cult. It was an example of great veneration of a particular person and idea manifested by a body of admirers. I was told by every Life student that I ever knew that adjustments and subluxations makes one impervious to any disease. Magical thinking. Chiropractic couldn't stand on its own and had to have a ptichperson. That's where Williams excelled. Hucksterism.

Ironically, it's been shown and studied that hypertension associated with an upper cervical subluxation can be rectified by an upper cervical adjustment. Watch the news broadcast on Youtube.

"Former Graduate", The world is indoctrinated into medicine before birth. Tonsils are ripped out, all due to the "Germ Theory"...a healthy well maintained body recieving good food and spinal adjustments isn't capable of fending for itself. This is what Dr. Sid then, and todays DC's must contend with. Sid often relied on dogma and theatrics to exemplify the atrocities of medicine and the possibilities provided by chiropractic.Yes, he often appeared as if on stage. He felt the need for dramatic gestures as a means to shake us from our allopathic slumber...take a chance with chiropractic. Eight months ago, a newspaper featured me in my helping a five year old girl who for one year suffered from chronic tonsillitis, fever, and fatigue. The MD's administered antibiotics every three weeks, then seeing no change after one year of their nonsense, told the parents she needed her tonsils and adenoids removed. The parents brought Emma, she exhibited left head tilt. After determining that she had a right atlas listing, I delivered an adjustment to atlas. The fever broke the next day, tonsill swelling went down, and she regained her strength by the end of the week. Her family went to the papers and TV stations. Eventually the newspaper editor came to my office and...I told "The chiropractic story". Go out there DC's! Make Dr. Sid Williams proud! He helped form you. Now let's form more DC's, so that we may help the world understand and recieve good and necessary CHIROPRACTIC!

No one FORCES a student to take on a student loan. It's a CHOICE made BY THE STUDENT. There are many who take the maximum student loan per semester because they CAN, not because it is necessary. Alternatively there are many who kept their loans to a minimum and worked part and full-time and minimised their expenses to attain their dream of being a Chiropractior and helping the multitudes suffering needlessly because Medicine keeps stringing them on with ineffective care. Just because a student has no will power, and is so greedy to take the maximum then squander it (I've seen it first hand) while at school is not the school founder's or administration's fault. Its THEIR OWN and should stop belly-aching and blaming everyone but THEMSELVES!

I spent 4 years at Life; graduated in 1991. Dr. Sid was a true visionary and that vision inspired thousands of others to give, love and serve. He wasn't perfect and he had no problem speaking his mind, which offended many a small minded individual. But the man stood for a principle that was highly misunderstood...that the power that made us is the power that heals us and that this principle is THE PURPOSE of the chiropractic adjustment. Period. Not an easy position to stand for when we are all raised in the cult of pseudo-scientific medicine, but he stood for it proudly for decades. I for one was saddened to hear of his passing. In the final analysis, his good deeds far outweighed his failings.

To those of you whining about the debt that you somehow seem to believe that Dr. Sid "made you" take on...time to grow up campers. YOU signed those papers and now YOU are failing in practice. If you continue to take a victim mentality, YOU will continue to be miserable. No gettin' around it.

The passing of a good man. But the legacy he created will live on in greater life expression for millions for generations to come. What more could one man do for humanity than that?

I feel bad for the haters, for they have no vision of truth. You deserve where you are at in life. I know Life produced excellent Chiropractors, they know how to adjust, diagnose, and really fix people. I've interviewed and have been adjusted by hundreds APOM hundreds. The best Chiropractors come from Life and Palmer hands down. There are exceptions, but not many.

My sincere condolences to Dr. Nell and family.

I met Dr.'s Sid and Nell several years ago and they were so sweet to my three sons! I appreciate all they have done for our profession. A legend has died. We must move forward as Chiropractors.

Some of you are so quick to point out faults of a man who had two passions: family and chiropractic. Why not look at our current so-called leaders in chiropractic. The scientific expert witness that so many of us flock to has committed perjury, malice and fraud. God forbid any of us are ever sued for malpractice but if our attorney decides to hire the "esteemed" scientific expert witness and opposing counsels asks, "Dr. __ have you ever committed perjury?" If he commits perjury again and says no - we lose the case, if he says yes - we lose the case. And yet our profession continues to hail this fraudulent guru by attending his seminars, buying the stuff he hawks, and subscribing to his newsletter.
Before we assail a true legend. . perhaps we should work on cleaning up our current lot of "leaders."
Are you willing to lose your license because the infamous Dr. Perjury testifies for you?

Dr Sid was truly a one of a kind, bigger than life, persona. I attended Life from 1983-6. I do admire his vision and passion. He was controversial, but that is the nature of the profession itself. Nepotism was rampant. The whole family was on the payroll... with maximum salary and minimum contribution. Kim was a "department head" but in all my time there, I never saw her or even met her.

Having said that... his risk and vision to start that school, and make it succeed against all odds is admirable. I cannot empathize with those on here complaining about their student debts. I had a ton myself. But with Life's degree and dedicating myself life-long learning, I have repaid my student loans many times over, raising 4 kids, providing them life enriching experiences like study abraod. To those complaining about student loans... your problem is not Dr. Sid... it is you. Perhaps you should have listened more to him. You obviously missed the point.

BTW..... I heard the "money" chant many times during. I can quote it verbatum. It was NEVER about money; it was the OPPOSITE. His point...every time... in encouraging stressed, poor, struggling students... was that if you SERVE people first, then the wealth will come secondary to that. I took that to heart and have practiced for 26 years with that philosophy and can testify to all, that it is true. That advise alone was worth more than the entire cost of my tuition.

“It is only when you free yourself from negative emotions in all activities, by accepting complete responsibly that you can begin to achieve goals and happiness in every area of your life.
