Marietta Man Killed Crossing Austell Rd.
As in other recent pedestrian deaths in Cobb County, Arthur Horne walked outside a crosswalk.
A Marietta man was killed Friday afternoon trying to cross Austell Road just north of Hicks Road.
The death of Arthur Horne, 38, was at least the fourth time in two months that a pedestrian was killed in Cobb County while trying to cross a road outside a crosswalk.
Horne walked into the path of a southbound gray 2004 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Claudia Hopkins, 22, of Austell about 6 p.m. Friday, Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said.
Horne was pronounced dead at WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell. Hopkins was not hurt and is not expected to be charged.
Still, police ask anyone with information about the crash to call 770-499-3987.
The fatal collision occurred about 2½ miles north of where Wendy Nolan of Austell was fatally struck by a Toyota Corolla while trying to cross Austell Road south of Floyd Road on Feb. 24.
Nolan’s death came during a spate of pedestrian-vehicle accidents in Cobb County, including:
- The death of a 50-year-old man near Southern Polytechnic on Feb. 25.
- The death of former McEachern football coach Charles Collins in Smyrna on Feb. 23.
- The serious injuries suffered by Greensboro, NC, visitor Preston Lee Hester on Powder Springs Road at Oxford Road on Feb. 23.
Friday’s fatality also was about 1½ miles south of the spot where 4-year-old A.J. Newman was killed while trying to cross Austell Road in April 2010.
