Miss Mamie Talks Cupcakes
The part-owner of the cupcake shop on the Marietta Square sat down to talk with Marietta Patch.
Cupcakes shops seem to be popping up, and in the Marietta Square, employees at Miss Mamie's Cupcakes are keeping busy. When I stopped by to talk with part-owner Mamie Doyle one day around 3:30 p.m., the shop that won the Food Network's Cupcake Wars, was busy with customers.
After graduting from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Atlanta, Doyle interned at the bakery, which then had a different name. A few months later, she bought the business.
Doyle sat down with Marietta Patch to talk about her business and about cupcakes in general.
Marietta Patch: Do your flavors rotate?
Doyle: Yes. In the fall, we'll have Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Caramel, Spice Apple.
MP: What is your best selling flavor?
Doyle: Our best selling flavor is Stout cupcake. It's a chocolate cake, and we make it with beer. It's been our best seller...Bacon's really big right now. We tried a bacon cupcake, and it took off pretty well.
MP: Why do you think the Stout cupcake is your best seller?
Doyle: It's delicious. And, I think people like it probably because of the fact that it has the beer in it because you would never know by tasting it that it has beer in it. It's just kind of fun, a cupcake that has beer in it.
MP: Cupcakes seem to be a growing trend. Why do you think that is?
Doyle: I think cupcakes are a growing trend because they're affordable for people, so they feel like they're splurging on something without breaking the bank. And, also because they're the perfect size. I think for parties, they're popular because people like to cut them up and try them. It's gourmet and you can have a variety of (them). Like hot dog trucks -- they have gourmet hot dogs; every kind of hot dog. Like Taqueria Tsunami that just opened up -- they have 15 different kinds of tacos. I think people like to try all the different ones. I've had that one, I've had this one.
MP: What else do you sell besides cupcakes?
Doyle: We make custom cakes here, and then we're actually just coming out with a cake line that hopefully is going to be offered to the public in the next couple of weeks. We're going to be making a cake book with a catalog of 40 different cakes.
