Speak Out: Was Petraeus Resignation Necessary?

Is infidelity a valid reason for someone in power to resign? Tell us what you think.

David Petraeus is the latest government official to resign after admitting an affair.

According to the Associated Press, a friend and former top aide of the retired general said Petraeus began an affair with his biographer last year, just two months after becoming director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The 60-year-old Petraeus, who has been married 38 years, quit his job Friday after acknowledging the affair.

The Petraeus situation is the latest in a line of political scandals involving government officials. Others in power have resigned after similar accusations.

But leaders do not always resign from office despite revelations into their personal life. In 2009, Mark Sanford, then the governor of South Carolina, admitted to having an extramarital affair with a woman he met in Argentina. Sanford declined to resign and remained in office until his term ended in January of last year.

Should elected officials and/or those in government positions resign if caught in extramarital affairs? Do those leaders have a duty to step down in those situations, or are they justified if they choose to remain in their position?

Share what’s on your mind with us, and then return here to see what your neighbors in Paulding, Douglas and Cobb have said.

While self restraint is the hallmark of leadership, we must not penalize a lion for being a lion. If a lion is hungry, why put a steak in front of him and expect him to ignore it? It is time to stop judgin and start reflecting...
Here is an interesting perspective: Agape - No Strings Attached
By Lia Fuller O'Neil
"Love. It's such a simple word. And such a complex emotion. Even when we desire to love in a simple, uncomplicated way, love has a way of twisting itself back on us, catching us unawares. It's not easy to keep the different kinds of love, the different kinds of relationships, in their proper contexts. Even when we desire with our whole hearts to pursue love it is often very difficult to keep from falling in love.
Love does not like to sit still while we neatly pigeonhole it. There are an infinite number of ways we can love people, art, nature, and God. The lines may be fairly easy to see in some kinds of love, but the lines differentiating the love for a friend and the love for a lover are extraordinarily complex."

It is not complex. We know the difference between each love we have and know the proper way for each one. We are human not animals. So i have to disagree with you. May God help you see the difference in each emotion of love you have and help you see the boundary's that come with each one. Bo

Conduct unbecoming of an officer. Military pension should be suspended.

I agree with you GaPatriot. However I also think if this started back in March and they White House, FBI & the CIA all knew about it, why did it only come out after the election. Is it because that he would have to testify about Benghazi? And then the truth would come out about our ruler that he was covering up the Terrorist attack by Muslims?

First he is retired Army, so there is no conduct unbecoming an officer. Read my lips, he is a civilian. Now should he resign, yes because of the position he now holds. I just wish the media spent 1/10 as much time uncovering what happened in Benghazi as they are chasing around bimbos who bed powerful men.

Agreed GaPatriot , a leader is supposed to be the example for those they lead. If they can not be true leaders and stand by a oath they had taken with their wife/husband then they are not true leaders of men/women. How can they trust you to lead them in combat or whatever if you can not be trusted in your own home.

The question is not about judging the morality of his behavior; the question is whether his behavior could have provided accessibility to intelligence information in his span of control. Those of you who enjoy spinning conspiracy theories, knock yourselves out.

Not trying to spin anything. Just wondering why it was not brought out earlier. And speaking of accessibility to intelligence, what is the difference between intelligence being "leaked" by an unnamed source in the government then from the General that he may or may not of told anything to this woman?

There is something suspicious going on here. The timing stinks.

When you hold a position of trust and power, you must behave with higher standards. The lust or desire to be as young and full of life as he used to be and sharing of things he loved with someone young, whom he thought had his back, has been his downfall.

I do not think he should have resigned, and no one should judge him: that power belongs to God. Inasmuch as he holds a very powerful office, and should have respected that, he is still human. The faults of the other humans have not come to the surface yet, because they are guilty of the same sin--it is only a matter of time before they are caught also. As the saying goes:"There go I, but for the grace of God."

I strongly believe that if he will betray his wife, that is his mate that he is suppose to cherish, love, protect, guard, above all others. Then he would betray anyone else if the desire was there for his benefit. And as far as saying he is after all human--yes he is so therefore he has a brain that tells him right from WRONG. Then he makes his choice. Unlike the guy talking about the lion. The lion does not have the brain to realize the difference between RIGHT and WRONG. He only has animal instint so therefore, yea, he's going to choose the STEAK. I know their are men that have affairs because they don't think with their brains, or their hearts for that matter, they think with something else. But that's something they then have to live with for the rest of their lifes. And their spouses (if they find out )have to live with the protrayal done to them by the person they so deeply trusted, loved and cared for, above all others. Bo

The facts are that Petraeus was always a professional spook. Spooks dont
ever give any information. Spooks obtain information, and give false information
to targets in a significant crisis. We will never know what happened in Bengazi
on 9-11-2012. Thats an anniversary. Today 11-14-2012, U S President Obama
refused to give any info , answer any question about Bengazi at his press conference. Senator Feinstein is upset she was not told . It is not the job of spooks
to tell anything to anyone, last of all a politician-- all of those are just continually running
for office, and they think they have done a good job when they win an election.
Americans must stop complaining.

For all you who hint at a dem/Obama conspiracy on this, please remember that one of your rep icons, Eric Kantor, knew for a month or more but chose to say nothing. So whose behavior is really suspicious?

Petraeus has demonstrated integrity in his work. As a professional, he should have and must have separated work from his personal life. In Iraq he showed his compassionate side. CIA needs a leader with this quality. He should not have resigned. This is a great loss for the agency and the country.

Out standing officer, I have known him since he was a LTC in 101st airborne during Desert Storm. WHAT HE DID WITH HIS PRIVATE LIFE can not distract from his leadership ability and his effort to carry the fight to the enemy, which he did without peers. GREAT LEADER, WARRIOR WHO IS TRULLY SORRY about his mistake. Evaluator you are SPOT ON. Csm Joe Hill

If it became a policy of the U.S. government to remove a person in power for sexual indiscretion such as adultery or entertaining a mistress we would have had to remove several of our most popular presidents of the U.S.A. This would include FDR, Dwight D. Eisenhower, JFK and of course Clinton. Although Clinton was impeached allowed to complete his 2nd term in office. Consequently there is much more concerning General Petreaus' resignation. Due to appear before the hearings concerning the Syrian attack, one could assume this decision was made because he knew information not disclosed properly to our Commander and Chief. It could be that the General in adjusting to his newly appointed CIA job did not properly study the protocol for the chain of command in revealing classified to proper authorities. I doubt this would ever be possible of a 4 Star General. Or could it be the protocol of the CIA blocks classified info to our President in such an incidence with major international consequence. Who will have the red face after the investigation is completed? The CIA or the General. I vote for the CIA. If this is true we may never discover the truth about the Syrian US Embassy attack and Petraeus may become the scapegoat for the CIA. I pray the truth will be revealed and that Petraeus will not be charged. He deserves forgiveness from our nation and praise for his brilliant leadership in our two wars. He deserves grace from our nation not condemnation. Lavilla Walker

Conduct unbecoming an officer and tempting a lion with a piece of raw steak are completely wrong conclusions and analogies as it concerns Petraeus' actions. Petraeus' actions center on the principles of personal character, personal integrity and the forfeited trust of the American people. His revealed actions clearly demonstrate his failure on each level as it concerns character and trust. His resignation is appropriate.

The man has earned his military pension and that has absolutely nothing to do with his resignation for cause from the CIA. Whether or not he owns up to the American people concerning the Libya attack and his own direct awareness of what he and this administration knew about it, remains to be seen. As it stands, once again the mainstream media in America appears to be providing a pass on the entire matter as it concerns this administration. In my opinion, I don't see their position changing anytime soon and sadly, the majority of Americans appear to be comfortable once again not knowing the truth about the leadership of this nation.
