Gwinnett County's namesake, Button Gwinnett, was shot 235 years ago today in a duel. He died three days later from gangrene.

Sept. 13, 1922

Viola Ross Napier of Bibb County and Atlanta Constitution reporter Bessie Kempton became the first two women elected to the Georgia General Assembly, according to the Georgia Historical Society and Georgia Info., The University of Georgia.

Both were elected as one of three representatives from their respective counties.
