Unidentified Woman Hit, Killed by Car
An unidentified pedestrian was hit and killed in a crash on Sandtown Road in Marietta early Saturday morning.
A female pedestrian wearing dark clothing stepped into the path of a white 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix heading southbound on Sandtown Road, the Marietta Daily Journal and Examiner report.
The woman was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital but died as a result of injuries, the MDJ and Examiner report.
The identity of the black woman, approximately 5-foot-4, 110 pounds, is not known. She is believed to be in her forties or fifties and has short gray hair.
The driver has been identified as Rocio Mandujano, 18, the MDJ and Examiner report.
Anyone with information that may help in identifying the victim is asked to call Cobb police at (770) 499-3987.
This year has seen several accidents involving vehicles hitting pedestrians:
- A Marietta Police officer was seriously injured in August when he was hit by a car while conducting traffic.
- A 2000 Toyota Corolla struck a pedestrian while she was attempting to cross South Cobb Drive near Appleton Drive in May.
- A 21-year-old Marietta man was hit by a car while crossing Roswell Road at North Marietta Parkway.
- In April, a Marietta man was killed trying to cross Austell Road just north of Hicks Road.
- A man suffered serious injuries when he walked across Atlanta Road south of Old Clay Street and was struck by a red 1991 Ford Mustang,
- A 50-year-old man crossing South Marietta Parkway, by Southern Polytechnic State University, was struck by a car Feb. 25 and died at Kennestone Hospital.
- Wendy Nolan, 39, was struck by a red 2004 Toyota Corolla on Feb. 24 while crossing Austell Road south of Marietta. Nolan was pronounced dead at Kennestone Hospital.
- Preston Lee Hester, 62, of Greensboro, NC, was trying to cross Powder Springs Road against the light on Feb. 23 when he was hit by a green 2002 Toyota Camry that was traveling north on Powder Springs Road on a green light.
- Former McEachern football coach Charles Collins, 66, of Smyrna was killed just on Feb. 23 when he was hit by a white 2004 Chevrolet Silverado while he was trying to cross Atlanta Road in Smyrna.

I wonder how many of these people were in legal crosswalks. Every day, it seems, I see people trying to cross four-lane (middle turn lane) highways just feet from a legal crosswalk. I saw three of those people on Saturday. One lady (with a small child) was standing in the middle of the road with little hope of getting the rest of the way across. She, too, was mere feet from an intersection with a legal crosswalk. This is one kind of injury or death that can be prevented with a little common sense.

Was she Latina or was she caucasion? I am caucasion and native to Cobb County 6 generations and I know to cross at the cross walks when I´m near an intersection. You have supported my statements; if police had been watching that intersection and saw that woman not far from the crosswalk, she would have been arrested for endangerment of a child. So the police are too busy gathering revenue from those going a few miles over the speed limit instead of arresting those violating crosswalk violations. I rest my case. Thank you for your post.

I have crossed the intersection of Atlanta Road and Windy Hill Road many times and have almost gotten hit while legally crossing in the cross walk many times as well, complained to the City of Smyrna countless times and they still refuse to patrol and watch the cross walks there. They prefer to put their officers 2 miles down Windy Hill toward Cobb Pkwy to catch speeders. Our police departments could care less about what happens to pedestrians being put in danger at dangerous intersections and I expect to see a lot more injuries and deaths before something gets done about it. Oh and yes I had the sign to cross and was in the crosswalks when I almost got killed 3 times by people speeding. If I wasn´t being cautious when crossing I would not be around to comment on this subject.
