Hundreds came out to Marietta Square to join Santa and Mrs. Claus for the kick-off to the holiday season with the Christmas Tree Lighting Thursday.

Local school choruses, including Marietta Center for Advanced Academics and Sawyer Road Elementary, performed Christmas carols as children visited with Santa in the gazebo.

The 35 foot Blue Spruce Christmas tree from North Carolina was donated by Big John’s Christmas Trees and had over 950 lights and ornaments. Over 5,000 lights decorated the tops of buildings in the Square and 1,200 luminaries scattered the grounds.

Did you come out to the Square yesterday? Do you intend on visiting Santa at his workshop on the Square this season? What's your favorite holiday tradition?

Santa on the Square is one of our family traditions. We've been going for more than 10 years. We see Santa then eat lunch at the Marietta Pizza Kitchen. We usually go about a week before Christmas, even though our kids are grown and as big as some of the adults. Before we see Santa, we love to go to Coker's Tree Farm on Macland Road, where we've been cutting down our tree during Thanksgiving weekend.
