Gov. Nathan Deal Visits Lockheed in Marietta

During his visit, Gov. Nathan Deal received status updates for the site’s current programs, including the C-130J Super Hercules, C-5 Super Galaxy, P-3 Orion, F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal visited the Lockheed Martin site in Marietta on Thursday. During his visit, Gov. Deal visited the site’s production lines to meet with employees and toured a C-130J on the flight line. The governor also received status updates for the site’s current programs, including the C-130J Super Hercules, C-5 Super Galaxy, P-3 Orion, F-22 Raptor and the center wing assembly for the F-35 Lightning II. The aerospace industry and Georgia have strong ties, with more than 500 aerospace companies calling the state home. In 2010, Georgia’s aerospace exports topped $4.3 billion, ranking the state as the fourth highest for such exports in the United States. Future C-5M Rolls Out of Marietta Hangar

The aircraft received new engine pylons and wiring and will now be fitted with new, state-of-the-art GE F138-GE-100 turbofan engines and undergo flight checks.

A future C-5M rolled out of the hangar at the Lockheed Martin facilities in Marietta on May 10. Dozen F-35s Call Eglin AFB Home

The F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing production jet is now assigned to the Marine Fighter/Attack Training Squadron 501 residing with the host 33d Fighter Wing, where it will be used for pilot and maintainer training.

The twelfth Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II destined for the training fleet at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., was ferried Tuesday. U.S. Marine Corps pilot Lt. Col. Fred Schenk piloted the aircraft, known as BF-11, which departed Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base in Texas at 10:02 a.m. CDT for a 90-minute flight to Florida’s Emerald Coast. Strand Call-A-Thon Aims to Raise $50,000 in 12 Hours

Money raised will go toward the Friends of the Strand’s Capital Campaign, which covers the renovation costs of re-opening the Strand in 2009. The call-a-thon will be the first event in a fundraising push to support the Strand’s continued success.

The Earl Smith Strand Theatre will be kicking off its 2012 fundraising campaign with the First Annual Strand Call-a-thon on Wednesday, a 12-hour fundraising event complete with an open house and live entertainment. The goal is to raise $50,000 in one 12-hour push. Members of the Friends of the Strand Board will be manning the phone bank on the Strand stage from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., while performance sets take place in front of them at the top of every hour. The event will be free and open to the public and will also be broadcast live over the internet at www.ustream.tv/channel/strand-theatre. Michael Falcon, the 22-year-old son of ShelfGenie president and co-founder Barry Falcon, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 10 years ago.

ShelfGenie will match 100 percent of every donation up to $250 per donation made by ShelfGenie employees, franchisees, designers, installers, suppliers and friends as part of its mission to raise $25,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Ride to Cure Diabetes. The Cartersville science museum is your pick for a family-friendly place to spend time on a staycation.

It appears that when you want to get away without really going away, you go to Cartersville. In this week’s regional Readers’ Choice survey of staycation destinations, three of the top four vote-getters are Cartersville sites: Tellus Science Museum, Pine Mountain Recreation Area and Booth Western Art Museum.
