2 Rules Fine Art presents a solo art show for Birmingham artist Kay Vinson. Vinson’s show will feature her newest body of work, “Better Than New.” Vinson is a painter whose mixed media are filled with texture, pattern and soothing summer hues. Handmade papers, photo decals and found objects peek out under layers of colorful acrylic. Sarah Parrott, of Marietta, got booted off Fashion Star Tuesday after designing faux wrap dresses, of which she said, “I’m not a big fan of my dress personally.” It was Mentor's Choice night, and her mentor was Jessica Simpson, who wanted her to create elegant dresses. “I believe in her so much, but I do want to broaden her horizons” to get her into Macy’s and Saks, Simpson said on the show. The Center for Puppetry Arts' play is done with blacklight puppetry, projected animations and filmed shadow puppetry. The puppets are about a foot-and-a-half tall. The Walker School’s Xanadu is among the high school musical productions recognized in Monday’s nominations for the annual Shuler Hensley Awards. Xanadu, which had its run in February, is nominated for costume design, light design and orchestra. It also received honorable mention for technical execution. Artists scattered Marietta on Saturday and Sunday for the Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art Plein Air Paint Out. From the local homes and gardens to the dynamic architecture of downtown, historic Marietta has many picturesque scenes that proved perfect for plein air painting. The Marietta-Cobb Museum’s Inaugural Plein Air Paint Out featured a judged exhibition and sale of artwork at Surace Art Studios. Candi Stargell, a Marietta-based children's author, launched a character and values book series entitled Little Darby Mouse via Kickstarter.com. Stargell hopes to raise $5,550, with pledges of $1 or more, to fund her self-published project by March 20.
