Marietta’s high school football teams look to break out tonight after tough opening games last week. Marietta (0-1) at Hillgrove (1-0)—Marietta’s defense struggled against South Cobb in a season-opening 33-26 loss at home. That doesn’t serve as a good omen as the Blue Devils now have to focus on stopping Hillgrove’s powerful attack, led by future Alabama Crimson Tide running back Kenyon Drake. The Blue Devils’ best bet may be to ride the shoulders of talented quarterback Anthony Jennings and keep the Hillgrove offense off the field. Kickoff is at 7:30. Osborne (0-1) at Woodward Academy (0-1)—…

The high school baseball season has been going on for over 10 weeks now, but for most teams it ends Friday. Marietta will be hosting the game of the day in the Marietta Patch. The Blue Devils will be shooting to improve their seeding in next week's state tournament. If Marietta – currently fourth in Region 5-AAAAA with an 5-6 record – can get past Wheeler on Friday at Wheeler, then the Blue Devils – pending tiebreakers – could earn the three seed heading in to postseason play. However, should Marietta slip up in their regular season finale, they'll find themselves with the four seed heading …
The Lassiter (18-6, 9-1) baseball team has a slight percentage-point advantage over Etowah in the Region 5-AAAAA standings, but for all intents and purposes is tied for the lead. On Wednesday, the Trojans travel to Marietta (12-11, 5-5) to take on the Blue Devils who are holding on to the fourth place seed in the region. With two games to go, and Marietta holding onto a two-game lead for the final playoff spot in the region, it would be best for the Blue Devils to win one of their remaining games. The Osborne (1-20, 0-11) baseball team doesn’t have a shot at postseason play, but an upset win over East Paulding (14-8, 7-4) at home on Tuesday could upset the balance of things at the top of the standings in Region 5-AAAA play. The Marietta (11-11, 4-5) baseball team is not in an enviable position Monday. The Blue Devils hold a slim one game lead over fifth-place Walton, and must play the fifth-ranked team in the state, Etowah (18-6, 9-1). Only the top four finishers in region play advance to the state tournament, so Marietta would like to pull an upset over Etowah to maintain its hold on that fourth spot. Here's the high school sports schedule for Monday: Baseball Marietta at Etowah, 5:55 p.m. We want to make Marietta Patch the place to go for all the latest high school sports news, but we need your help. There is no way the Osborne (1-19, 0-10) baseball team can gain enough ground to qualify for the state tournament. They can, however, wreak havoc on the teams that are trying to boost their seeding. On Friday, Osborne travels to Kell (17-6, 7-3), a team that is ranked fourth in the state and second in the region. In other Marietta Patch sports news, Marietta and Osborne will begin their respective Track and Field championships on Friday. The Marietta (10-9, 3-3) baseball team could really use a win after dropping its last two games to Region 5-AAAAA opponents by a combined score of 26-10. The Marietta (10-8, 3-2) baseball team spent the last three weeks putting itself in good position to make a late-season run in the standings. The Blue Devils won six of seven games dating back to March 23, and are two games behind the Region 5-AAAAA leader, Etowah. But Marietta was thumped by Lassiter on Monday, and now must face Wheeler (12-7, 3-2) on Wednesday. A win over the Wildcats gives the Blue Devils hope in the region standings. A loss means Marietta will be looking up at three teams it has already lost to. Here's the rest of the high school sports schedule for Wednesday: Baseball …
