Atlanta Hawks coaches, athletes and cheerleaders shared important health and fitness tips with homework center students at various drilling stations in the gym at Birney Elementary on Oct. 16. The Atlanta Hawks NBA Fit Clinic is the NBA league's comprehensive health and wellness program that encourages physical activity and healthy living for children and families. The Birney Elementary Homework Center, a SCANA Energy Homework Centers, operates from 2:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The center serves 45 third through fifth grade students. The public, city and county schools and school organizations show their group, business or school's creativity and personality by making a scarecrow as part of the city's annual Scarecrows on the Square contest each fall. Marietta Parks and Recreation Department sponsors this event each fall. Entries are judged on originality, construction and presentation. Bright paintings, prints and glass art from around the country from eight different artists will be presented in Color of Summer at 2 Rules Fine Art. This is the first time 2 Rules Fine Art will feature glass art as part of a group exhibit. Community Veterinary Care’s mobile unit partnered with MUST Ministries this week to offer medical services for animals belonging to MUST clients. For weeks, MUST has been promoting the event and giving clients an opportunity to make an appointment. For many families struggling to make ends meet, pet healthcare can be a low priority. Dr. David Wolf, veterinarian and owner of the community vet service, provides check ups, heart medicine samples, pregnancy exams and more. The Marietta Kiwanis Club hosted the ninth annual Marietta Soap Box Derby on Saturday at the Marietta High School. The Race The Marietta Kiwanis Club has been hosting the Marietta Soap Box Derby locally since 2004. The races bring friends, families, new participants and visitors as well as local business sponsors together to share in the love of this historic sport. The three-day Marietta Gone With the Wind celebration featured appearances by Mickey Kuhn, who played 7-year-old Beau Wilkes; Patrick Curtis, who played baby Beau; and Morgan Brittany, who played Vivien Leigh/Scarlett in The Scarlett O'Hara War. On Saturday, the Marietta High School class of 2012 walked across the stage at Northcutt Stadium, Marietta Middle School, and said goodbye to their high school lives. Among the student speakers were Student Body President Paula Diaz, Senior Class President Janei Smiley, Salutatorian Mary Allyson Chastain and Valedictorian Sagar Patel. Members of the Marietta, Smyrna and South Cobb business associations joined the Northeast Cobb Business Association for an after-hours event in Kennesaw Tuesday at California Dreaming Restaurant and Bar. The event was sponsored by the restaurant, and Acworth's Ollie Patterson provided music. About 100 people from all over the county, representing most of the business associations and the Cobb Chamber, were in attendance.
The theme Saturday at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park was "Trains, Trains and More Trains!"  Kids from Marietta and the surrounding area came out to enjoy a day exploring trains with musicians, model trains, and dress-up, craft and photo stations. "Junior Ranger Day was Amazing," Benita Duling, director of Educational Activities at the park, said of the event. "We had so many kids and families attend; the Visitor Center was overrun with people."
