Art, Powerboats, Healthy Foods Make for a Great Family Weekend

Get out with the family and make some healthy and fun food, entertainment and home-related choices this weekend.

We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children. You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

Here are some of our suggestions:

1. First Friday Art Walk. This event takes place in historic Marietta Square on the first Friday of each month through October. This free, self-guided tour showcases local artists and is hosted by Marietta Square area restaurants, galleries, museums, venues and boutiques from 5 to 9 p.m., rain or shine, and participating venues display an official Art Walk banner in their window.

2. 33rd Annual Spring Atlanta Home Show at Cobb Galleria Centre. Take advantage of one-stop shopping for everything for your home, inside and out and talk face-to-face with more than 350 participating companies offering you latest home remodeling products and services. Make it a family event and see what you can do with your own home.

3. Marietta Farmers Market.  The first market of the year opens from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday along the north side of Marietta Square. This is a great event for the whole family to gather plants and yummy fruits and veggies from many local venders.

4. The Southeastern Powersports and Outdoor Expo at Jim Miller Park. Hosted by ATV Ministries, this event features something for every powersports and outdoor enthusiast, including ATVs, amphibious vehicles, boats, ,monster trucks, motorcycles, personal watercraft, racing teams and hunting and fishing.

Also featured will be  various Christian artist and comedians, the Christian Clown Ministries and other faith-based entertainment. This event will also showcase and support many faith-based, community service, and charitable organizations in the community and abroad.

The expo runs from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $5.00 for adults and free to children 12 and under when accompanied by an adult. Call 229-415-9061 for information.

5. Earl Scruggs concert at . Scruggs, of course, is the legendary bluegrass banjo picker who perfected the three-finger "Scruggs" style of playing the instrument. His "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" is essential, but Scruggs may be most famous for creating the theme song to the Beverly Hillbillies.

Scruggs has earned his place in both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor and has earned a National Heritage Fellowship award and multiple Grammy awards.
