As Hot as You Want It

Here's what you need to know to start the day July 12.

1. It doesn’t get much hotter around here than it will today, with a high of at least 97 and a heat index into the triple digits, the National Weather Service says. The overnight low will be no cooler than 73. A heat advisory and a Code Orange smog advisory are in effect, and there’s a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.

2. Three CCT routes, including the buses that run along those routes for riders with disabilities, are on the chopping block when the Cobb County Board of Commissioners meets this morning at 9 at 100 Cherokee St., just off Marietta Square. Marietta Patch will have coverage, or you can watch live on cable Channel 23 or at the county website.

3. The Milford Little League’s all-star team saw its season come to an end Sunday to East Marietta; now it’s time for the next generation of Little Leaguers to sign up for fall ball. The city of Marietta has a developmental league from Aug. 29 to Oct. 29 for 7- to 10-year-olds, who get 90 minutes of instruction and an hour of game play at each of eight sessions at the Aviation Sports Complex.

4. Marietta will close at the end of July to start a six-month, $1.43 million renovation that will overhaul the walking track and parking lot and add two tennis courts and a picnic shelter, among other changes, the Marietta Daily Journal reports.

5. We’re still more than a year away from Cobb County elections, but the ballot is filling up. The latest to announce a campaign is Rebecca Keaton, who the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports is running for clerk of the Cobb County Superior Court. The Marietta lawyer has served in the county Solicitor’s Office and founded the Keaton Foundation, which helps find homes for older orphans and special-needs children. A former Cobb Republican Party chairman, Scott Johnson, is leading Keaton’s campaign. Incumbent Jay Stephenson is not seeking re-election in 2012.
