Cobb to Celebrate National Library Week

National Library Week will include lectures, exhibits, book discussions, a movie showing, kids activities and more at the Cobb libraries.

Whether you are a job seeker looking for resources to land a new job, a parent looking for free activities for children or a student searching for research tools, you might find what you're looking for at the .

The will celebrate National Library Week from April 8 to 14.

“Today's libraries provide a wide range of opportunities for people with diverse needs and interests,” said Helen Poyer, Cobb Library Director, in a press release.

“That means providing their communities with tailor made collections, services and programs for people of diverse backgrounds, language abilities and technological skills.”

Libraries make both print and digital information affordable, available and accessible to all people. Libraries provide cultural heritage and genealogical collections, materials in print and electronic formats, job seeking resources, e-government resources and many other creative and resourceful programs.

The Cobb County Public Library System is celebrating National Library Week with several activities, including the following:

Monday, April 9:

  • Introduction to eReaders and eBooks Class, Central Library, 2 p.m. Registration is required, call 770-528-7953.
  • Exhibit: Beyond Rosie: Women in World War II, Central Library, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This exhibit is on loan from the Kennesaw State University Museum of History and Holocaust Education.
  • African American Authors Book Discussion Group, Stratton Library, 5:45 p.m. The group will be discussing “The Warmth of Others Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson.

Tuesday, April 10:

  • American Civil War in Film: The Red Badge of Courage, Central Library, 6:30 p.m. Watch the film, followed by a moderated discussion by Dr. David Parker from Kennesaw State University.
  • Butterfly Gardening, East Cobb Library, 6:30 p.m. Part of the Master Gardener series; learn how gardens can become a destination for the area’s butterflies.

Wednesday, April 11:

  • Conversations with the Curator, Central Library, 3:30 p.m. Kennesaw State University Curators Julia Brock and Richard Harker will talk about the roles that women played in World War II and how the exhibit, “Beyond Rosie: Women in World War II” was developed.
  • Flower Power! East Cobb Library, 4:15 p.m. School-age children can enjoy stories about all things garden-related and then plant a seed to take home to watch it grow. 

Friday, April 13:

  • Exhibit: In Her Father’s Eyes, East Cobb Library, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This exhibit is on loan from the Kennesaw State University Museum of History and Holocaust Education.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April.
