Frugal Family Activities—Fun, Festive, for a Cause

There's something for all ages and a few activities are for great causes.

This week Frugal Family scoured our resources and found fun, unique family activities taking place all over metro-Atlanta. There’s something for all ages and a few activities are for great causes. If you are a mother of multiples or a parent of a "princess," enjoy gardening or celebrating Purim, or have an interest in helping eliminate Atlanta’s hungry, you will want to participate in one of the following:

Northwest Atlanta Moms of Multiples Spring Sale. Saturday March 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For tots to tweens, cash and check only. Top quality name-brand clothes in sizes 0-juniors, nursery and toddler furniture, décor, equipment, high chairs, swings, tons of popular toys, games, outdoor play equipment, gently used bikes and scooters, single/double/triple strollers, portable cribs, car seats (recent models only), loads of books, videos, CDs, DVDs, shoes of all sizes, holiday clothing and more. Princess Day at the Georgia Aquarium. Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kids 12 yearrs and under. Presented by Eversave, all princesses, princes and frogs—in costume of course—are invited to help raise awareness for frog conservation. Georgia Aquarium is committed to ensuring the survival and conservation of all amphibian species, and what better way to highlight the struggles of the world's amphibians than to join with the frog's greatest friend, the princess. Festivities include princess interactions, photo opportunities, giveaways, arts, crafts and games, all with princesses and frogs. Radio Disney will be onsite from 12 to 2 p.m. to join in the fun. One Free child age 12 and under in princess, prince or frog costume with each paid adult ($34.95) or Annual Pass Member. Each child receives one free Total Ticket, which includes Aquarium admission, AT&T Dolphin Tales show, Deepo's Undersea 3D Wondershow and Frogs—A Chorus of Colors.

Smith-Gilbert Gardens GATHER ‘n’ GROW Grand Opening. Saturday, March 10, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., the gardens will introduce its newest addition to the community. Paths winding through sensory plantings to please the senses, an “A to Z” bed (with plantings starting with each letter of the alphabet), vegetable beds and whimsical elements like chime arbors, bubble pools and animal topiaries are included in the festivities. Raised beds are available to families and individuals participating in the Veggie Plot Series, an educational program about sustainable and responsible vegetable gardening. The Ford Elementary School students will perform a musical selection. Kids may paint a Purple Martin house to hang in the Gather ‘n’ Grow Garden or make a rain gauge to take home to yours. Regular Adult admission prices apply, but kids 12 years and under and all the activities are free. For this special event, admission is $7 for adults and Free for kids 12 and under. Smith-Gilbert Gardens, garden and learning center located in Kennesaw, is a collector's garden featuring a large wide variety of plant material including outdoor contemporary sculptures and the historic Hiram Butler House. It offers educational programs for both children and adults and includes topics such as beekeeping, rock wall building, Bonsai gardening, caring for ferns, perennial flower beds and open air painting classes Gather ‘n’ Grow Garden Grand Opening. 2382 Pine Mountain Rd., Kennesaw, 30152. 770-919-0248.

Hunger Walk/Run 2012 at Turner Field, Downtown Atlanta. Sunday, March 11 from 12 to 4 p.m. More than 13,000 walkers, runners and families, young and old, will gather at Turner Field's Green Lot to take a step toward ending hunger in our community. All funds raised benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank and other local hunger relief organizations. All walkers who raise or contribute $25 or more will receive a free Hunger Walk/Run t-shirt on the day of the walk. Enjoy treats  from some of the hottest food trucks Atlanta has to offer; a Kids Play Zone featuring inflatables, educational activities, games, face painting and more; the Nationwide NASCAR show car and interactive race simulator; and live music, dancers and jugglers. At 12 p.m., the event/registration opens; 2 p.m. the 5K Walk/Run; 4 p.m. Walk Closes.

Purim PALOOZA Purim Pancake Breakfast, Costume Parade and Songs. Sunday, March 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Purim PALOOZA 2012 Pancake Breakfast, Costume Parade and Magic Show. Purim celebrates the Jewish deliverance as told by The Book of Esther. A pancake breakfast featuring characters and mascots will begin at 10 a.m.

Following breakfast, children are invited to participate in a Purim costume parade, which will take place up and down Main Street, the main corridor at the center of the Jewish Community Center. At 11:30 a.m., all are invited to the Morris & Rae Frank Theatre for Purim songs and a spectacular magic show. The parade, songs and magic show are open to the community and free of charge. The Membership Department will provide hamantaschen (Jewish cookies)and coffee in the main lobby in celebration of Purim. Breakfast: $12 adult; $7 child (10 & under); Free for children (3 and Under).
