Get Out to a Play, Holiday Market, Martinis and Music

An event at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art, a play at St. James' Episcopal Church, a holiday market, bake sale and silent auction, and events at the park: What are you doing this weekend?

1. The is hosting on Friday. Enjoy martinis, hors d’oeuvres and musical entertainment by Johnny Parrazzo along with access to all exhibitions from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $8. For more information, call 770-528-1444.

2. opens "," a gem of a comedy by William M. Downs and directed by Lane Teilhaber, on Friday. A seemingly perfect young couple, who are unable to have children, have a chance meeting with a God-fearing pregnant girl from Iowa who offers to let them adopt her out-of-wedlock baby. Trouble is, the girl is Christian and they are Jewish, but she doesn't know it. So they pose as Lutherans.

The cast includes Dana Barrett, Sean O'Rourke, Bronwyn Glantzberg, Greg Fitzgerald and Laura Hassett.

Performances: Friday/Saturday, Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m; Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2:30 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. , 161 Church St., Marietta.  Tickets: $12.50 to $20 (Saturday dinner shows). Call 770-218-9669 for reservations.

3. Learn how to sample the biological diversity of a stream. The macroinvertebrates (insects, snails and other critters) found in a stream are excellent indicators of the condition of both water quality and habitat.

This workshop will focus on collection techniques for either rocky or muddy bottom streams and macroinvertebrate identification. A quality assurance test is available at the end of the workshop for those who wish to test their skills. The workshop is at the Cobb Water Quality Lab on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 770-528-1482 or email water_rsvp@cobbcounty.org to register.

4. Preschool’s Holiday Market, Bake Sale and Silent Auction is Saturday, from 9 a.m. 2 p.m. Admission is free. The event hosts more than 45 vendors with a wide variety of products, most of which are handcrafted. You’ll find personalized chocolates, handmade soaps, on-site monogramming, hand-sewn items, candles, jewelry, pottery and so much more. A silent auction will offer items from each vendor and local businesses. The market is located at Due West United Methodist Church.

5. Claudia Oakes, director of the Chieftans Museum, presents “Major Ridge and John Ross: Preamble to the Trail of Tears,” a discussion about the decisions made in Georgia and our nation’s capitol that led to the forced removal of the “Five Civilized Tribes” on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Artillery talks  on will take place on the mountain top at 11 a.m. noon, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
