Girl Scouts, Yankees and Parking Gates

Here's what you need to know to start the day July 18.

1. We’ll have little-bear weather today: not too hot and not too cold for a midsummer day. It will be mostly sunny with a high around 90 and little or no wind, the National Weather Service says. Overnight, the low will be about 70.

2. Monday is history day at Marietta Patch and in the city of Marietta. Return to Marietta Patch at noon to read about one Mariettan’s experiences under Union occupation in 1864. You can see history in action when the Marietta Historic Board of Review meets at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, followed immediately by a meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission.

3. The at 1395 S. Marietta Pkwy. David Swann will discuss creating surreal and mixed-media images.

4. Marietta is installing a gate system at the City Hall parking deck to try to limit parkers to people with business at City Hall and deter those who are going to the Superior Court building across the street. Everyone entering the deck’s upper level will receive a ticket. If you leave the deck within 15 minutes or get the ticket validated at City Hall, there’s no charge. Otherwise, there will be a flat fee. That fee now is $20, reports the Marietta Daily Journal, which also says the city paid a contractor $81,775 to install the gates on the upper and lower levels and to maintain them for two years.

5. The Geek Squad Summer Academy is coming to on Aug. 2 and 3, and girls entering sixth grade through 12th grade have until Friday to sign up. Online registration is available through the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. More information, including the optional overnight aspect of the camp, is available through Southern Poly.
