LEARN BIG THINGS ABOUT ROBERT SMALLS

Where/When: , 101 Auburn Ave., NE, Atlanta, Tuesday, July 5, 10 a.m.

Why go: Robert Smalls was an enslaved African American who freed himself and his family by commandeering a Confederate transport ship, to freedom in Charleston harbor. Eventually, he became a politician, serving in the South Carolina State legislature and in the United States House of Representatives. This event is sponsored by the National Black Arts Festival and includes pictures, three-dimensional artifacts and visual displays of Smalls’ life and family. This exhibit runs until Sunday, September 18.

ANIMAL DADS

Where/When:  , 800 Cherokee Ave., SE, Atlanta, Thursday, June 29, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Why go: As part of the Stroller Cubs program at the zoo, this week’s topic is Animal Dads, letting parents and kids learn about dads in the animal kingdom. Stroller Cubs (ages 0 – 2 years), get to visit animal exhibits and meet an animal ambassador during this introduction to wildlife for stroller cub guests.

LET YOUR KIDS RUN (AROUND THE BASES)

Where/When: Turner Field, 755 Hank Aaron Dr., SW, Atlanta, Sunday, July 3, after the Braves vs. Orioles game

Why go: Just when you think you can’t take it, here’s a shot at your children letting all that pent-up Summer “steam” out, by running the bases at Turner Field. Kids 14 and under are welcome to run this Sunday after the Orioles game.

Pricing: Free/with ticket to game. Tickets run from $20.50-$108.50, and both promotions are included in ticket price. Buy four or more tickets to get a Braves free cap plus, be entered to meet the 2011 Braves at a game. Cap pick-up is at Fan Central, aisle 132. The game starts at 1:35 p.m.

 

LEARN A LITTLE SOMETHING THIS SUMMER WITH YOUR CHILDREN

Where/When: , 441 Freedom Pkwy., Atlanta, Monday, July 4, 2 p.m.

Why go: Instead of eating too much and setting a bad example for your kids, take them to the Carter Presidential Library and Museum to teach them all about patriotism. Featuring the Southern Order of Storytellers, “Patriotic Stories” just might help you kids realize what July 4th is all about.

Pricing: Free with paid admission to the museum. Children 16 and under are always free.

 

FREE BOOKS FOR CARD CARRYING KIDS

Where/When: Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library, 1 Margaret Mitchell Square, Atlanta, Wednesday, July 6, 10 a.m.

Why go: The Coretta Scott King Awards Book Fair is the only book fair in the country that features the books and illustrators that have received the award, named for Mrs. King. A bonus just for the kids is that every child who presents a public library card, receives a free award-winning book.
