Here's what you need to know to start the day June 1.

1. The weather today can be summed up in one word: hot. It will be mostly sunny with a high in the mid-90s today, the National Weather Service says. There won't be a lot of humidity, but enough for a heat index of 97 or so. The temperature will drop only to 71 overnight. But at least the air quality should be OK.

2. The kicks off its Summer Reading Program today. It's actually three programs: one for children, one for teens and one for adults. Sure, the newly departed Atlanta Thrashers were one of the partners for the children's program, but the show goes on. Stop by the Central Library or other location to sign up and get more details.

3. Some congratulations are in order from the . music teacher Joanna Federico Cox was named the school system's 2012 Teacher of the Year on Tuesday night, the Marietta Daily Journal reports. 4. Bad news from the world of reality of TV: did not win on the Food Network show Chopped on Tuesday night. The Ray's on the River corporate executive chef was the second of the four chefs eliminated when the three-judge panel thought his grilled boar chops and artichokes were undercooked. 5. We're still reeling from the endless assault of tornadoes this spring, but here's something else for you to worry about: Today marks the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center expects an above-normal season through Nov. 30. But then it seems that's always the prediction. For now, get to know these names: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irene, Jose, Katia, Lee. Those are the first 12 names for tropical storms this year, the National Hurricane Center says. We hope we don't get to hear the best names on the list, Ophelia, Philippe and Whitney.
