Hitchcock, Family Classics, Fan Favorites at the Strand

The Strand Theatre's movie line-up kicks off Friday with "The Wizard of Oz" and includes comedy shorts by Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, and the Little Rascals as well as movie greats such as "Casablanca" and "Back to the Future."

The Earl Smith Strand brings suspense, true love, and cult classics to the screen this fall. This season’s movie line-up features something for everyone; Sunday matinees for silent films including comedy shorts by Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, and the Little Rascals, while weekend evenings are filled with movie greats such as Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, Back to the Future and a Hitchcock movie series.

The Strand will also be showing 96 minutes, a 2011 widely released movie filmed in Marietta.

The Wizard of Oz (1939) (G). Friday, August 24, 8pm. In this charming 1939 film based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories and starring Judy Garland, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.

Sing Along with Mamma Mia! (2008) (PG-13). Saturday, August 25, 8pm. Sing along to your favorite ABBA songs with a theatre full of your friends at Mamma Mia! Set on the colorful Greek island of Kalokairi, the plot serves as a lively background for a wealth of ABBA songs, and we’ll even put the lyrics on the screen for you! A young woman soon to be married discovers that any one of three men (Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Colin Firth) could be her father. She invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep). Watch the drama ensue in this feel-good experience that will have you singing and dancing in the aisles

Silent Comedy Shorts (NR). Sunday, August 26, 3pm. Strand Theatre Organists Ron Carter, Ken Double, Larry Davis and Rick McGee are coming together to accompany several different silent comedies: Harold Lloyd in "Bumping Into Broadway", The Little Rascals in "Dog Heaven",  Charlie Chaplin in "A Night at the Show", and Laurel and Hardy in "Big Business." Special guest emcee will be Mr. John Moore, former radio personality from WSB radio, who will treat the audience to tidbits of what it was like to be an announcer at the premier radio station in the southeast during the height of radio.

Back to the Future (1985) (PG). Saturday, September 1, 8pm. Marty McFly, a typical American teenager of the Eighties, is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a plutonium-powered DeLorean "time machine" invented by slightly mad scientist Doc Brown. During his often hysterical, always amazing trip back in time, Marty must make certain his teenage parents-to-be meet and fall in love - so he can get back to the future. Starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.

96 Minutes (2011) (R). Friday, September 14, 8pm. Filmed in Marietta.  Inspired by true events, 96 minutes is the story of four young lives slammed together in one shocking moment. The events of the night in inner city Atlanta, Georgia, unfold in real time as we inter-cut between a carjacking and the beginning of that day, following four separate kids - who they are, where they come from, and the seemingly innocuous decisions that lead them towards a life changing conclusion. With no adults to guide them, they're left on their own to try to survive not only this night, but the complex reality of the world they live in.

Casablanca (1942 )(PG). Saturday, September 15, 8pm. In this Oscar-winning classic, American ex-pat Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) plays host to gamblers, thieves, and refugees at his Moroccan nightclub during World War II, but he never expected Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) – the woman who broke his heart – to walk through his door. Ilsa hopes that with Rick's help, she and her fugitive husband (Paul Henreid) can escape to America. But the spark that brought the lovers together still burns brightly.

Nosferatu (1922) (NR). Sunday, October 14, 3pm.  This classic 1922 German Expressionist horror film was directed by F. W. Murnau and stars Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok. The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula and was originally sued by Stoker’s estate and copies confiscated. According to legend, just one copy of the film survived years later was copied over and over to give us the movie audiences know today. This silent movie will be accompanied in full by Ron Carter on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ.

Vertigo (1958) (PG). Wednesday, October 31, 8pm. Part of the Alfred Hitchcock series. Starring James Stewart, Kim Novak and Barbara Bel Geddes. John "Scottie" Ferguson is a retired San Francisco police detective who suffers from acrophobia and Madeleine is the lady who leads him to high places. He fears she is going insane, maybe even contemplating suicide, because she believes she is possessed by a dead ancestor.

The Birds (1963) (PG-13). Friday, November 2, 8pm. Part of the Alfred Hitchcock series. Starring Tippi Hedren.  A wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people in increasing numbers and with increasing viciousness.

North by Northwest (1959) (PG). Friday, November 9, 8pm. Part of the Alfred Hitchcock series. Starring Cary Grant. Madison Avenue advertising man Roger Thornhill finds himself thrust into the world of spies when he is mistaken for a man by the name of George Kaplan. Foreign spy Philip Vandamm and his henchman Leonard try to eliminate him but when Thornhill tries to make sense of the case, he is framed for murder. Now on the run from the police, he manages to board the 20th Century Limited bound for Chicago where he meets a beautiful blond, Eve Kendall, who helps him to evade the authorities.

Psycho (1960) (R). Friday, November 16, 8pm. Part of the Alfred Hitchcock series. Starring Anthony Perkins and Vera Miles. Phoenix officeworker Marion Crane is fed up with the way life has treated her. One Friday Marion is trusted to bank $40,000 by her employer. Seeing the opportunity to take the money and start a new life, Marion leaves town and heads towards California. Tired after the long drive and caught in a storm, she gets off the main highway and pulls into The Bates Motel. The motel is managed by a quiet young man called Norman who seems to be dominated by his mother.

Pandora’s Box (1929) (NR). Sunday, November 25, 3pm. G.W. Pabst's film that catapulted Louise Brooks to international acclaim and made her the icon of the Jazz Age tells the tragic story of Lulu, the hedonistic dancer and prostitute. Released in 1929, after the advent of “talkies”, Pandora’s Box caused quite a scandal due to its racy content.  Brooks radiates sexuality with her subtlety of expression and gesture. This silent movie will be accompanied in full by Ron Carter on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ.

Tickets

Tickets for movies are $8 for adults and $7 for students, seniors and military. There will be an organ preshow and sing along on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ 30 minutes before each movie showing.
