Hot Pitchin', Sizzlin' Day, Corn Boilin'

Here's what you need to know to start the day July 11.

1. Expect a lot of sun and a high around 94 today, the National Weather Service says, with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and an overnight low of about 73. Hot enough for you? If not, maybe Tuesday’s journey into the upper 90s will suit your taste.

2. Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren holds his annual Corn Boilin’ from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at . For $20, the Marietta Daily Journal reports, you get your share of more than 3,000 ears of corn, as well as tomatoes hoecakes and other items. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Cobb County Youth Museum.

3. The Milford Little League’s 11- and 12-year-old all-stars lost the championship game of the District 2 tournament Sunday afternoon at Sewell Park in East Cobb to host team East Marietta. Milford played hard but ran into a buzz saw in East Marietta pitcher Jason Rooks, who threw a 16-strikeout no-hitter. Marietta Patch will have a full report with video and photos at 10 a.m.

4. On the government front, the Marietta Board of Lights and Water meets at noon in the City Council chambers; among the agenda items is an appearance by Ray Buday of the Marietta Housing Authority to talk about single-meter water billing for seniors living at The Retreat at Dorsey Manor. That’s particularly timely because the next phase at Dorsey Manor, The Tower, is being dedicated Wednesday morning at 10. The City Council meets at 5:15 p.m. in the council chambers at 205 Lawrence St. for an agenda work session. At the county level, the Board of Commissioners will have an agenda work session at 9 a.m. at 100 Cherokee St. The Board of Zoning Appeals has a work session at 1:30 p.m. at 1150 Powder Springs Rd. And the Board of Elections and Registration meets at 4 p.m. at 736 Whitlock Ave.

5. It’s free Slurpee day at 7-Eleven stores because it’s July 11 (7-11, get it?). Which would be a great thing if, say, 7-Eleven had stores in Georgia. According to the company’s website, the nearest store to Marietta is 285 miles away in Belfry, KY. That’s a long way to go, and more than $35 worth of gas each way, for 7.11 ounces of free Slurpee.
