Spring Ahead This Sunday

The Marietta Fire Department reminds residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms when changing their clocks this weekend.

It's that time again. This Sunday clocks are set ahead one hour at 2 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3 a.m. local daylight time.

Smoke alarms are the only device in the home that will let you know there is a fire, Marietta Fire Lieutenant Tim Cameron said. "A properly working smoke alarm could provide enough early warning to allow for a successful escape."

It's a good idea to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms twice a year when you change your clocks, Cameron said. "Alarms that are powered by electricity should also have their batteries changed twice a year."

Marietta Fire Lieutenant Tim Nalley recommends replacing smoke alarms every 7 to 10 years. It's important to have several smoke detectors in a home, including one on every level and within 10 feet of a bedroom.
