Have fun this long weekend without breaking the bank on gas. Check out these five great trip ideas just a short drive from Marietta.

By Vanzetta Evans

1. Athens – There’s more to do in Athens than just cheer on the Dawgs. It's just about 50 minute drive from Lawrenceville, you can easily get there and back on one tank of gas. Check out the Georgia Museum of Art. Or tour one of the city’s many historic houses.  When your day is done, dine at one of Athens many delicious restaurants. Check out Athens Patch’s directory for where to find great eats.

2. Chattanooga, TN
 – Chattanooga is just a two and a half hour drive from Lawrenceville. Start your day early or plan to stay over because your day will be packed with fun activities. Check out the Chattanooga Zoo or the popular Tennessee Aquarium. For nature enthusiasts, enjoy the great outdoors at Rock City or Ruby Falls

3. Greenville, SC – Just over two hours away, there’s something for all ages in Greenville. The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is the 10th largest children’s museum in the world. If you like cars, visit the BMW Zentrum where you can see classic cars and learn about the car maker’s history. The Zentrum is free, but you can also get a tour of the BMW manufacturing plant for a charge.

4. Helen – Adults can go and taste new wines at the Habersham Winery or Frogtown Cellars. Little girls (and grown women too) will love a visit to Babyland General Hospital, the birthplace of the Cabbage Patch Kids in nearby Cleveland. And don’t forget to make a visit to the old German town.

5. Lake Hartwell, SC - Straddling the Georgia/South Carolina line is this gem of a lake. The drive will take about an hour and 40 minutes. Enjoy fishing, boating, and swimming on the lake. You can also hike the scenic trails, go bird watching and enjoy a picnic and more. A campground is also on site.
