Spring into Fun at the Parks

Parks in Marietta are hosting a range of events including nature walks, crafts, a veteran fundraiser, historic presentations and more. Check them out and tell us what you'll be attending.

Spring is (almost) in the air, and there are some changes and events at the that you should know about.

The closing time changes. Parking lots will remain open until 8 p.m. at the Battlefield and 7:30 p.m. at and Mountain Road.

March and April programs, which are free and open to the public, include:

March 17: Historian Brad Quinlin is presenting a program on the bravery and valor of Irish soldiers during the Civil War; 1 p.m. in the Visitor
Center.

March 19: Monday Night Program, "James Henry Burton and the Macon Arsenal." Historian Gene Wilson is the presenter; the program is at 7 p.m. in the Visitor Center.

March 21, 24, 28, & 31: Wildflower Walks with Dr. Mary Meyer from 9 a.m. to noon. Walks leave from the Burnt Hickory Road/Pigeon Hill Battlefield parking area.

March 31: Park Day Annual Volunteer Event. Volunteers are needed to aid park staff with maintenance projects that keep the Battlefield beautiful. 9 a.m. to noon. For more details, visit: http://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp1056527.jsp

March 31: Nature Photography Hikes; 8 a.m. to noon. Pre-registration required. For more information, visit the park website.

April 16 to May 31: “Project Poppy” fundraiser. Visitors may purchase poppies in honor of a veteran for $1. The poppies are the handwork of local school children. All proceeds go to “Wreaths Across America,” a nonprofit organization working to remember and honor fallen heroes who served through wreath laying ceremonies at national cemeteries. Wreaths are placed at the Marietta National Cemetery in December.

April 18, 21, 25, & 28: Guided Bird Walks; walks leave from the Visitor Center parking lot at 7:30 a.m., rain or shine.

April 23: Monday Night Program, " Army Sutlers." Historian Phillip Whiteman is the presenter; the program is at 7 p.m. in the Visitor Center.

April 28: National Junior Ranger Day, "Trains, Trains and More Trains!" 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Celebrate the kid in all of us with a day exploring trains, historic and modern. Musicians, model trains, dress up, craft and photo stations abound as kids (and adults) learn all about locomotives.
