"The Impact of the Bell Bomber and Lockheed plants upon Cobb County and Smyrna"

This lecture is by Tom Scott, Professor Emeritus of history at Kennesaw State University, where he taught for over 40 years.  He is well known as author of the book "Cobb County, Georgia and the Origins of the Suburban South: A Twentieth Century History."

The coming of the Bell Aircraft Company in 1942 and Lockheed in 1951 transformed Cobb from a relatively small, rural society into a large, affluent, sophisticated suburban county.  Tom Scott's talk will focus on the years from 1940 to 1970, when a dynamic local leadership attracted an aircraft industry and then built an infrastructure of roads, utilities, colleges, schools, libraries, and parks that made possible a high quality of life for a growing population.  The quarter century after World War II was an era of prosperity and grand expectations throughout the nation, but nowhere was progress more apparent than in counties such as Cobb in the metropolitan Sunbelt South.

Dr. Scott will discuss how that transformation took place.
This lecture is sponsored by The Smyrna Historical and Genealogical Society, which operates the Smyrna Museum, and schedules bimonthly speakers at various locations in the City of Smyrna.
