Marietta City ACT Scores Outpace State

Marietta City Schools (MCS) composite score (21.3) on the 2013 ACT outperformed the state (20.7) and national average (20.9) by 0.2 percentage points. 

Marietta High School (MHS) students outpaced the state in all subject areas tested with higher average scores in English (20.8), Mathematics (20.4), Reading (22.2), and Science (21.3). The 2013 ACT results reflect the performance of 170 MHS seniors.

“The ACT continues to increase in value as a credible measure of college readiness. I am very pleased that Marietta High School students outperformed the state and nation this year,” said Dr. Emily Lembeck, MCS Superintendent.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement test designed to measure college readiness and preparation. Scores are based on a scale of zero to 36. The ACT includes four separate exams in English, Reading, Mathematics and Science. There is also an optional writing portion.

The ACT college readiness benchmark scores help determine whether students are likely to be successful in core college courses such as English Composition, Algebra, Social Science, and Biology. Students scoring 18+ on the English test, 22+ on the Algebra test, 22+ on the Social

Science test, and 23+ on the Biology test have a fifty percent chance of obtaining a B or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses.

Approximately 69 percent of MHS seniors scored 18+ on the English test, 41 percent scored 22+ on the Algebra test, 53 percent scored 22+ on the Social Science test, and 42 percent scored 23+ on the Biology test.
