Students in the Cobb County School District will soon be putting pencil (#2, of course) to paper and taking some very important standardized tests.

Starting on Wednesday, Sept. 18, first, third, and seventh graders will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test, or CogAT. The CogAT tests students' reasoning abilities through verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative assessments.

These tests will continue until Friday, Sept. 20.

As soon as school returns on Monday, third, fifth, and seventh graders will be taking the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). This assessment challenges students on their knowledge of vocabulary, language arts, math, critical thinking, and other subjects.

The ITBS testing period will last until Sept. 30

The results of these tests allow administrators to set up proper curriculum and determine which students or student groups are struggling with certain content areas and need additional instruction.
