Chicken and the Egg Has What It Takes for Success

New Marietta restaurant opened this week at 800 Whitlock Avenue to rave reviews from customers and media

What came first -- the chicken or the egg?  Who cares, but we're glad the Chicken and the Egg Restaurant has come to Marietta this week.

The restaurant officially opened its doors Monday for dinner beginning at 5 p.m.  They are located at 800 Whitlock Avenue. They will begin serving lunch as well next Monday. An official "grand opening" is slated for the first week in September.

Chicken and the Egg is a neighborhood gathering spot that will serve sophisticated yet approachable American farmstead fare. The name represents the cycle of life and the importance of sustainability.

The menu at Chicken and the Egg features innovative twists on classic American dishes. The food will incorporate seasonal ingredients from local farms as well as sustainable beef, pork, poultry and seafood.

Marc Taft, the chef/owner, and his wife, Elizabeth, were on hand to greet guests and talk about the menu. It will utilize approachable ingredients that highlight what the earth has to offer, they said.

Dinner is moderately priced with entrées ranging from $10 to $20. In addition to a regular menu, lunch will feature a rotating “meat and three” format that allows for quick service with prices ranging from $7 to $12.

This hungry writer ordered Iron Skillit Fried Chicken with REAL Mac and Cheese (the highlight of my meal!). Braised greens comes with it, but I opted for smoked gouda potato gratin (it's great!).  I topped the meal off with a cappuchino and banana pudding. I had heard so much about this dessert that I had to try it -- and definitely was not disappointed!

The decor is comfortable and feels like a farmhouse, with open areas, large family-style tables for big groups and lots of chicken and egg motifs.

Check back with Marietta Patch next week for a full-fledged interview with owner Marc Taft and more about the background of the chef and his dream to own his own restaurant.  He lives five minutes from his job now and, after years of traveling, said he is glad to stay home and get to know his neighbors.

So come on out and meet Marc and try his new addition to the Marietta restaurant scene!
