Come-N-Get It Family Restaurant

Sometimes the most tedious part of dining out is figuring where to dine out. Patch makes it easy every Thursday; we find great restaurants for you. This week: Come-N-Get It Family Restaurant.

Overview: After hearing about It for months and seeing that it had five booths at The Taste Of Marietta, I decided to go see what the fuss was all about.

Located on the Church Street Extension, Come-N-Get-It looks like a country farmhouse complete with a porch and hanging plants. Inside, the restaurant has a long counter on one side to order and pick up from. The interior is simple, bright and clean; again reminiscent of a country kitchen. On display is a mouthwatering selection of cakes and Greek pastries.

I was made to feel welcome as Nick, the owner, called out a friendly greeting. I told him it was my first time to eat there, and he made the mind-boggling number of menu items much easier to choose from by going over the specials.

The Service: This is a family restaurant, and Nick and Helen, the owners, make you feel you feel right at home. I noticed they took a sincere (but not overbearing) interest in each table and customer. A friendly server made sure I had the condiments I needed–jams, jellies, butter, syrup–to make my meal to suit my taste.

The Food: Come-N-Get It specializes in both Southern style AND Greek cuisine. And they do both very well. Everything–biscuits, cakes, pastries included–are made from scratch. Since they buy all their vegetables from local markets and NOTHING is canned, this is a great place to satisfy your cravings for green beans, collards, mac and cheese and speckled butter beans. They’ve actually won awards for their spinach!

The cakes remind me of the ones my grandmother used to make with three and four layers, especially the coconut cake. The Greek pastries such as baklava and Greek donuts looked rich and moist. I decided it would be a great idea to get a couple of friends to come back with me one day just to sample and share some of the desserts. When you see them, you’ll understand why they deserve their own trip.

The All You Can Eat Breakfast and the Meat’N Two (meat with two sides) are the most popular choices. I chose the breakfast special and was amazed at what I got on my “first round”–three buttermilk pancakes, scrambled eggs (or to order), hash browns, sausage patties, applewood bacon strips, grits and biscuits.

The pancakes were light and fluffy, the applewood bacon scrumptious but as a Southerner, the menu item I most appreciated was my serving of grits. They were perfectly buttered and seasoned. I didn’t have to spend any time transforming them from the normal white bland grits most restaurants serve to the kind most of us Southerners like. I never did make it to the “second round.”

Breakfast is served from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday for $5.99 and all day Saturday and Sunday for $6.99.

The Meat‘N Two is the favorite choice at lunch and dinner. Meats include homemade meatloaf, fried chicken, fried catfish, pork BBQ and more. Again, all the veggies are fresh, not canned. Meat’N Two for lunch is $7.99 and $9.99 for dinner.

Greek American specialties include gyros, moussaka, souvlaki, spanikopita and, of course, baklava. All-beef hotdogs, burgers and seafood dishes are other popular menu choices at Come-N-Get-It. Dinner entrees are $12 and under.

Need To Know: Catering services, online ordering and private dining rooms available for parties.
