Kennestone Receives 3 Star Quality Rating
Only 12 to 15 percent of hospitals across the country received the 3 Star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality for clinical excellence based on National Quality Forum standards.
has received a 3 Star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). STS has developed a comprehensive rating system for the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals.
Only 12 to 15 percent of hospitals across the country received the 3 Star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality for clinical excellence based on National Quality Forum standards.
In the current analysis of national data covering the period from July 1, 2010 through June 30 the cardiac surgery performance of was found to lie in this quality tier, thereby receiving an STS-3 Star out of 3 Star rating, according to a press release.

“This recognition validates the hard work and commitment to excellence of our staff, physicians, administration, Board of Trustees and the WellStar community.” said Dr. William Cooper, director of cardiac surgery for WellStar Health System, in the press release. “Delivering top quality cardiovascular care has been our primary focus since inception of cardiac surgery in December of 2004. Quality, the culmination of appropriate, safe, efficient, timely and equitable cardiac care, has been and will remain our number one priority.”
WellStar Kennestone had 56 percent market share among adults in Cobb County for cardiac surgery. In 2010, WellStar Health System’s market share for inpatient cardiac services was 75 percent among adult residents in Cobb County. For the 5-county area that WellStar serves (Cobb, Douglas, Paulding, Cherokee and Bartow) it was 66 percent, according the the news release.

Approximately 14.38 percent of cardiac surgical programs received the 3 Star rating; approximately 74.75 percent received a 2 Star rating and 10.87 percent received a 1 Star rating for the current reporting period.
WellStar offers a cutting-edge comprehensive cardiac program, with the exception of transplant services. The WellStar cardiac program is providing a continuum of care to the patient population in northwest Georgia. The cardiac surgery program is housed at WellStar Kennestone.
