Marietta Ice Cream Plant Closing

The Kroger facility employs 140 people.

Kroger is closing the Southern Ice Cream Specialties plant in Marietta by the end of January, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday.

The facility, which makes Kroger's house-brand ice cream and other frozen treats, employs 140 people, the AJC said. The plant is at 1058 King Industrial Dr., south of Canton Road between Interstate 75 and Cobb Parkway.

Kroger will shift production to its two remaining ice cream plants, one in Colorado and the other in California.

Some of Southern Ice Cream Specialties' workers could find jobs with other Kroger operations, but the move is likely to add to the unemployment rate in Marietta and Cobb.

The jobless rate in Marietta dropped to 9.8 percent in September, according to preliminary, seasonally unadjusted figures the Georgia Department of Labor released Thursday. The rate was 9.9 percent in August and 10.1 percent in September 2010.

The pattern was the same for Cobb County, according to the state Labor Department: The unemployment rate fell to 9.5 percent in September from 9.6 percent in August and 9.8 percent in September 2010.

Just wondering how the costs of transporting from CO & CA to the East Coast will affect this decision, but I'm sure the bean counters thought about that (what do I know, eh?) Cheers

Not-so-brilliant move on Kroger's part. Close it's east coast ice cream plant so that their shipping costs from the remaining plants in Colorado and California go up to their midwest, southern, mid-Atlantic and east coast stores.

Good grief, if the rifle can kill someone, why on earth would you give it to a five-year-old? ThisRead More one just boggles my mind. I hope that even the NRA has a problem with this.

This is a fine example of freedom being too much to handle for some folks. The idiots who gave theRead More kid the gun should be jailed. Its obvious that a 5 year old should neither posses, nor handle a firearm period. Having said that I am a full supporter of the Second Amendment and the NRA. However we cannot measure the validity of the right to bear arms by using these idiot parents as a case study.
