'Blind Side' Inspiration at Sam's Club for Own Book Signing

Michael Oher, the pro football player who inspired both the movie and the book "The Blind Side, will be at Sam's Club signing his own book. This leads today's The 5 Things.

1. Michael Oher, the basis of the book and movie The Blind Side, will be holding a signing at 7 p.m. today for his own book I Beat the Odds. The event will be at at 150 Cobb Parkway South.

2. The Georgia Ballet recently donated a total of $2,140 to the Marietta Schools Foundation and the Cobb Schools Foundation. The donations came from a December benefit performance of The Nutcracker Suite, in which the Georgia Ballet invited community leaders to join them onstage.

3. A slew of city and county board meetings today for your civic duty enjoyment. The county's Transit Advisory Board meets at 6:30 p.m. at 463 Commerce Park Drive, Suite 114. Marietta's Business Licensing Department is holding a suspension/revocation hearing for Roberts Hotel Management at 2:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall while the city's Board of Zoning Appeals holds a work session and meeting beginning at 5 p.m.

4. Those interested in discussions of historic preservation along Church and Cherokee StreetsΒ  should consider attending a meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the in Conference Room B/C.

5. Today is Purim, the day of a Jewish festival commemorating the deliverance of Jewish people living throughout the ancient Persian Empire from a plot by Haman to exterminate them. The story comes from the Book of Esther.
