Center for Family Resources Big Winner on Oscar Night

Marietta nonprofit reports donations of more than $277,000 from Atlanta's only Academy Award-sanctioned viewing party, and that puts it at the top of The 5 Things today.

1. And the envelope goes to.... alright, that's a tired cliche, but a big winner Sunday evening was clearly The Center for Family Resources. The Marietta-based nonprofit raised more than $277,000 from Oscar Night America - Atlanta, the region's only sanctioned Academy Award viewing party. Congratulations!

2. Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup Program kicks off today, and both the Cobb and Marietta chapters will be sponsoring events through May 31 to pick up trash, reduce waste and beautify the entire county. Visit Keep Cobb Beautiful and Keep Marietta Beautiful for details and volunteer opportunities. Keep Cobb Beautiful will also hold its monthly meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. tonight at the 's Water Lab Building at 660 South Cobb Drive.

3. The Marietta Business Association's board this week announced that strongly endorses the continuation of the Cobb County SPLOST and backs the efforts of Citizens for Cobb's Future to see that the initiative passes on March 15.

"The MBA Board of Directors supports this initiative because we believe Cobb must continue to keep its infrastructure strong in order to remain competitive," said Meral Clarke, MBA president. "A continuation of SPLOST is the best way to achieve this goal."

The board noted that it did not speak for all of its members. In its newsletter, the association also included information and a link about Vote No on March 15, a citizens group that opposes the SPLOST.

Remember, early voting continues through March 11 with the final voting on March 15.

4. The Cobb County Planning Commission will hold a zoning meeting at 9 a.m. today at the on the second floor of 100 Cherokee St.

5. On this day in 1960, a newly elected President John F. Kennedy issued an executive order establishing the Peace Corps. Kennedy suggested the formation of a new "army" of the United States made up of civilians who volunteer their time and skills to travel to underdeveloped nations to assist them in any way they could. Peace Corps Day honors that order and the many people who have volunteered their time.
