City Announces Glover Park Concert Series Schedule

The lineup for this year's series of concerts throughout the summer in Glover Park tops today's The 5 Things.

1. During the summer, the hottest real estate in Marietta is Glover Park. Don't get to the park early enough, you might not get enough of a patch of grass or even sidewalk to lay out a blanket for the Glover Park Concert Series.

This week, the city's Parks and Recreation Department, which sponsors the series, announced a full lineup for the summer. The groups include:

  • Glow Band (Pop), April 29
  • Neons (70s and 80s), May 27
  • Cobb Symphony Orchestra (Jazz), May 28
  • Yacht Rock (Party Rock), June 24
  • Jesters (R&B and Beach), July 29
  • Tyn Tymes (Beach and Oldies), Aug. 26
  • Pieces of Eight (Beach), Sept. 30

These concerts are free to the public but a limited number of tables are available for rent. For information, call 770-794-5601.

2. The Cobb Alcohol Task Force through Saturday is hosting its 2011 Prom Dress Fundraiser, a different type of benefit sale in which previously adorned prom dresses and accessories are sold to raise money. The sale is part of the group's effort to secure non-profit status.

The sale takes place in a vacant storefront at 797 Roswell St. donated to this cause. The sale hours are 4 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Dresses are priced from $25 to $100 and range from a variety of designs, sizes and colors. Sales are final and cash only.

3. Since we are on the subject of dresses, we might mention that the first 100 brides-to-be who register early for the Boutique Bridal Show get a big swag bag of gifts. This event, sponsored by the Cobb Bridal Alliance and the Cobb County Convention and Visitors Bureau, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Taylor-Brawner House & Hall in Smyrna.

4. And in addition to all of the other plays and ballets we have on Patch recently, there will be "Honk" by The Art Place and presented by the Mountain View Arts Alliance. This musical comedy based on the Tale of the Ugly Duckling, debuts at 7:30 p.m. today with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at door. For tickets, visit theartplace.us.

5. Today is both Awkward Moment Day and Forgive Mom and Dad Day. Marietta Patch wonders if the origins of the two bizarre holidays are related?
