Civic Group Sponsors Transportation Forum

Civic League for Regional Atlanta's open discussion at Mansour Center about area's transportation needs tops The 5 Things today.

1.The Civic League for Regional Atlanta is holding a community forum from 6:45 to 9 p.m. today at the Mansour Center about regional transportation issues.

The forum will include presentations by planners from the Atlanta Regional Commission about metro Atlanta's growth over the next 30 years as well as the Transportation Investment Act, which will allow citizens to vote on a regional transportation SPLOST in 2012.

2. Cobb County Animal Control last week become one of the final 50 contestants in this year's ASPCA $100K Challenge as it competes for for grants totaling $300,000, including a top prize of $100,000.

The online voting was the first phase, where registered shelters competed to accumulate the most support. During the next phase of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals contest, competing shelters will submit information about how many animal lives they have saved through their work. The winners of the contest are scheduled to be announced in November. More information is available at aspca.org/100k.

3. The county is sponsoring a domestic violence training session "Stop the Violence: Help Youth Build Healthy Relationships" at , 266 Roswell St. There are two sessions available: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Registration is required by sending an email to pamela.mcclure@cobbcounty.org.

4. For your civic duty enjoyment, the Cobb Board of Commissioners  is holding a zoning hearing at 9 a.m. in the second floor boardroom at 100 Cherokee St.

5. Today is Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day. Hard to believe, but it has been 16 years since the bomb attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. For information, visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum.
