Cobb County on Furlough as NAACP Celebrates Juneteenth

The county takes advantage of another furlough, so that means more folks enjoying Juneteenth and rodeo. That's part of The 5 Things today.

1. Cobb County government offices are closed today due to another furlough day. Essential services remain available though.

2.  The Cobb NAACP is holding its eighth annual Juneteenth celebration this weekend as part of the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

Today's event, “The Night under the Stars,” features jazz, rhythm and blues, spoken word performances and more from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday at Glover Park.  3. A 14-year tradition, the Cobb Classic Rodeo returns to at 8 p.m. today, rain or shine. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children with some of the proceeds to benefit the Cobb County Sheriff Mounted Patrol Unit. Children under 5 get in free. Events include bareback riding, bull riding, steer wrestling, tie down roping, team roping and barrel racing, as well as trick riders and the rodeo clowns. For information, call 770-684-7277.

4. Tennis Dynamics at plays host to another key tennis event this weekend, the UCB Battle of Kennesaw Mountain Junior Open championships. The three-day event features some of the best players in Georgia and the Southeast.

5.  Today is the National Day of Prayer for Law Enforcement Officers. To date, 80 law enforcement officers in the United States have lost their lives in the line of duty. Let's remember all of our fallen officers.
