Cobb County Senior Games Host Closing Picnic

The final day of the 2011 Cobb County Senior Games tops The 5 Things today.

1. The Cobb County Senior Games wrap up the 2011 season from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at with horseshoe toss at 10:15 a.m., apple peeling at 10:30 a.m., corn shucking and checkers at 11 a.m. and the picnic at 11:45 a.m.

2. The Marietta City Council this week approved a request from Marietta Square Farmers Market founder Johnny Fulmer to add a Sunday schedule to the popular market. Beginning May 22, the market will be open from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. but at a slightly different location than the usual Saturday event: on Mill Street from the railroad tracks to West Park Square.

3. The offers The Godfather tonight. You know the story: Marlon Brando as Don Corleone transfers control of the mob dynasty to a reluctant son played by Al Pacino. The film is rated R and won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. It airs at 8 p.m. Friday. (But show up at 7:30 p.m. for the live organ pops variety show and sing-along featuring The Strand’s Mighty Allen Theatre Organ.) Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 students, and seniors.

4. The 21st Annual Marietta Greek Festival begins today at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 3431 Trickum Road. Friday festival hours are from 3 to 11 p.m. and will be free from 3 to 6 p.m. Visit www.mariettagreekfestival.org for information.

5. Today is Friday the 13th, typically a day deemed to bring bad luck. I find that it tends to coincide with the opening night of exceptionally bad horror films. (Yeah, that Priest movie has all the trappings of an awful movie, especially since the trailer didn't even bother to hide the monster. No need to see that one, folks!)
