Cobb Election Board to Meet for SPLOST Vote Certification

While county election officials are expected to make last week's SPLOST vote official this morning, Cobb transportation folks invite residents to consider submissions for state SPLOST. All of this SPLOST talk tops The 5 Things for today.

1. Even though last week’s SPLOST election was decided by less than one-fifth of 1 percent of the votes cast, there won't be an automatic recount of the results. In fact, the Cobb Board of Elections and Registration is expected to make them official when it meets at 8 a.m. today at the .

The single-issue special election approved four more years of the 1 percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for transportation, recreation, public safety and related capital projects. Based on complete but unofficial results, 42,971 people voted in the election: 21,525 for the SPLOST and 21,446 against, a difference of 79 votes.

2. And if you think you have heard enough about SPLOST for the next four years ...well... you won't have to even wait a full day for the next wave. The county is holding a public information open house from 3 to 8 p.m. today to present a Draft Transportation Projects List for potential inclusion in a Regional Sales Tax vote in summer 2012.

The current county list includes a $2 billion light rail project that would connect Acworth to Town Center and Kennesaw State University to the Cumberland area to the MARTA Arts Center Station;  a $230 million project to widen parts of Cobb Parkway, U.S. 41 and State Route 4 to six lanes; and a  $45 million project to widen State Route 92 to four lanes from Cobb Parkway to Dallas Highway and from Cobb Parkway to Cherokee Street/Glade Road.

3. And that's not all for your civic duty enjoyment for today. The county meet for an agenda work session at 9 a.m. today in the third floor board room at 100 Cherokee St.; the county's Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting meets at 3 p.m. at 463 Commerce Park Drive, Suite 108; and the Community Relations Council meets at 6 p.m. at the .

4. The hosts the 5th annual Digital Science Fair today, which integrates science with technology through varied mediums, including digital science boards. Digital science projects of the students will be on display beginning at 6:30 p.m. A silent auction will help raise funds for the upcoming an Engineering Design Expo.
