Cobb Symphony Orchestra Unveils Conductor

Grant Harville's selection as the orchestra's "man with the baton" tops The 5 Things for today.

1. The Cobb Symphony Orchestra announced this week that it has selected Grant Harville as its new associate conductor and creative director. Harville most recently served as the orchestra director at Ripon College in Wisconsin, and he won the Richard C. and Agatha Church Memorial Conducting Award in 2008.

Harville has also served as music director for the Madison Savoyards producution of Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore and was a guest conductor for the Oistrach Symphony in Chicago. He conducted the premiere of David Dies' opera Hills Like White Elephants.

3. The Cobb County School District wants to hear from you about future school calendars. The options include start dates of Aug. 1, Aug. 15 and Aug. 17. More details can be found at the survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NR9TSZ6.

The Cobb County Board of Education will allow the public to vote in the poll until 1 p.m. Thursday, then will select one of the three calendar options for the 2011-12 school year at its meeting that evening. Check back here at Marietta Patch for live coverage of the meeting Thursday.

4. As part of its ongoing programming for Black History Month, the Cobb County Public Library System will host a book discussion on "Slaves in the Family" at 10:30 a.m. today at the East Marietta Library, 2051 Lower Roswell Road, East Cobb. For details, call 770-509-2711.
