Countdown to Tuesday's SPLOST Vote

Marietta Patch columnists both for and against SPLOST square off today, while both anti-tax and pro-tax groups rally in Glover Park. This tops The 5 Things today.

1. In two days, Cobb County residents will determine whether they wish to continue the one-cent Special Local Option Sales Tax or SPLOST. The current SPLOST runs out in December, but the special referendum on Tuesday decides whether the tax should be extended.

Debate over the issue continues, including two columns on Marietta Patch today: One for the SPLOST; another against it.

The Cobb County Taxpayers Association, Georgia Tea Party, the Cobb County Libertarian Party and Americans for Prosperity are co-sponsoring a “Rock the SPLOST” rally from 1 to 2 p.m. today in Glover Park. Citizens for Cobb’s Future will hold its Family Fun Day at Marietta Square from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

3. Southern Polytechnic State University has been approved to add a master of science in architecture program to its existing five-year bachelor of architecture professional program. The degree proposal was approved on Tuesday by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, and the program will be implemented in Fall 2012.

4. Daylight Savings Time began at 2 a.m. this morning. Did you remember to "spring forward?"

5. Today is Donald Duck Day, who was first featured in Disney's Silly Symphony cartoon "The Little Wise Hen" on June 9, 1934. So why is today Donald Duck's birthday? Because he clearly wasn't born on the day of the cartoon, he was already a full grown duck! The creator of this site claims to have discovered Donald's true birthday in a later cartoon "Donald's Happy Birthday" in which his nephews plan a party. The date on the wall calendar was March 13. The site provides even more evidence.

That said, don't we all prefer Daffy Duck?
