County to Landscapers: Help Us Landscape Gateways into County

Keep Cobb Beautiful and Cobb DOT invite to landscapers to develop and maintain 11 monument-style entrances tops The 5 Things today.

1. Are you a master landscaper? Well, the county is making an offer that you might not want to refuse: Help landscape and maintain one of the county's 11 monument-style "gateways" into the county. Both the Keep Cobb Beautiful and the county have teamed up to find these landscapers.

DANE Tree and Landscaping Professionals in Acworth adopted the Wade Green Road entrance in Kennesaw. If you want to claim one of the other 10, call Keep Cobb Beautiful at 770-528-1135.

2. District 2 Commissioner Bob Ott is holding a special town hall meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight to discuss the proposed fiscal year 2011 Cobb County budget. Cobb government is facing an estimated $31 million budget shortfall.

The meeting has been moved from its original location at the East Cobb Government Center to the across the street at 4385 Lower Roswell Road.

3. Tonight's Marietta City Council could become a bit heated as its members determine how to respond to threats of a lawsuit from one of its members. Philip Goldstein has that his family may sue if it interferes with the construction of a five-story building on their property on Marietta Square.

The city on March 9 voted to lower height restrictions on the square from 85 feet to 54 feet. Goldstein's plans exceed that height.

4. Four new firefighters joined the this month after completing a rigorous 13-week basic firefighter class. Melisa Obrien, Cody King, Kurt Vermillion and Eugene Helton will each join a shift at one of the city's six fire stations.

The recruits were trained to the National Professional Qualifications 1 certified level, a national standard for firefighter training. They also received four weeks of additional training to meet Marietta Fire Department requirements.
