Escape to Amelia Island

This getaway at the coastal border of Georgia and Florida offers long stretches of quiet beaches and wild horses and history.

The local air is a bit hot and stale. Get away to a peaceful place and cleanse your spirit. Amelia Island is a little over a six hour drive from Marietta.

It is a barrier island, rich with history. The island is 13 miles long and four miles at it's widest point. Known as the “Isle of Eight Flags," this magical place has wild horses that  graze along its banks. There are 50 blocks of historical homes to take in, beach front hotels, as well as bed and breakfasts and spas on the island. For most seasons, there is camping, but the campground at Fort Clinch is being remodeled at this time.

For a bit more history: Construction on Fort Clinch began in 1847; although incomplete, Confederate troops occupied it by the thousands in 1861.
