Fire Forces Marietta Diner to Close Briefly

The landmark 24-hour diner, a mainstay of Marietta cuisine for 17 years, put in a slightly shorter day on Tuesday because of a small kitchen fire. This tops today's The 5 Things.

1. Ever since the on Cobb Parkway first opened its doors 17 years ago, the shiny steel eatery had not shut them againβ€”until Tuesday morning. A small kitchen fire forced the local landmark to close briefly.

A contractor hired to clean the kitchen's exhaust hoods once a month in the early hours had apparently forgotten to shut down a fan motor. Water hit wires, and sparks caused the tiny fire. The fire was extinquished quickly, and the diner was ready in time for the lunch hour.

Groups gathering for breakfast weren't left hungry though as the restaurant offered some free coffee and muffins.

2. The Marietta City Council meets tonight and plans to consider new height restrictions on future buildings around Marietta Square. The recommendation on the table would reduce the allowable height from 85 feet to 42 feet. If the top floor is set back, as in the case of the , to allow for patio space or similar design, the maximum height could be 54 feet.
