Free Night Out, Robbery, Ice Cream

1. Today will be sunny and hot, with a high near 98. The heat index will be brutal again today at 101. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 70. The heat will be with us all week, according to the National Weather Service.

2. Tonight is "National Night Out" and the will be hosting a free block party from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Autumn View Apartment Complex at 1035 Franklin Road in Marietta. The gathering will feature police officers, cars, motorcycles and surveillance equipment, according to Sgt. Patrick Bonito. Target Stores will hand out gift cards and other giveaways and a disc jockey will play tunes.

"We do this every year and like to have a good time with the neighborhoods," said Bonito, adding kids' games and prizes will also be on tap. The unique crime/drug prevention event is held around the nation on the same night to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships

3. Police are investigating an armed robbery of the Subway shop at 1295 Powers Ferry Rd. A man jumped the counter and produced a knife and took cash from the partially open cash register drawer before fleeing on foot toward Delk Road, Cobb police said. Police described the robber as a black man with a medium complexion in his late teens or early 20s, and nearly six feet tall. He weighed about 180 pounds and had short deadlocks and a sparse goatee beard.

4. The Cobb Planning Commission zoning hearing is today at 9 a.m. in the Board of Commissioner room, second floor, 100 Cherokee Street in Marietta.  The monthly board meeting is today at 5:30 p.m. at the Cobb Water Lab, 660 South Cobb Drive, Marietta.

5. Today is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day -- a time to enjoy a cold sandwich...an ice cream sandwich. In July and August, there are many special days for one kind of ice cream or another. The ice cream sandwich is so popular, and tastes so good, that it earns its own special day....today.  So have one and celebrate!
