Glover Park Fountain Springs to Life!

Prefaced with little pomp and circumstance and a simple gurgling noise, Marietta's premier fountain regained its role as the centerpiece of the square.

Barely two weeks after its trip to Alabama for restoration, the centerpiece fountain of Glover Park is fully operational with water flowing over its bowls.

The fountain was removed Feb. 22 after the city discovered it had rusted from the inside, making the water turn brown. The original forger of the fountain, Robinson Iron of Alexander City, Ala., dismantled the structure so that it could be completely refurbished.

A fountain has stood at the park since the 1890s, and the current fountain has stood there since 1985. The latest fountain project cost about $7,500. In unceremonious fashion at around 12:30 p.m. today, Mayor Steve Tumlin and Jimmy Stovall and Jerry Smith of the city's Parks and Recreation Department turned the fountain on to the delight of a few people who happened to be enjoying the park.
