And today is the first of August....do you know where August got its name?

1. August begins with a scorcher, according to the National Weather Service. It will mostly sunny, with a high near 96. Heat index values as high as 100.  Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 71.

2. In light of new vaccine recommendations, parents should make sure their children receive the required shots before returning to school in the coming weeks. According to officials, this year's requirements are a little different. The meningitis vaccine booster has been added for 15-to 19-year-olds for the 2011-12 school year. It was included after data suggested that protection provided by the initial meningitis vaccine only lasts about five years, as opposed to the previously-thought 10 years. 4. Are you an artist wannabe? Tonight is a "Sketch Night" at the Studio, 129 Church Street near the Square from 6-8 p.m.  Cost is  $10.  Try your hand at sketching -- The Studio hosts sketch nights twice a week. 5. Happy August!  The origin of August's name: It was the 6th month in the early Roman calendar, named after Julius Caesar Augustus. Its flower is the gladiolus and its two birthstones are peridot and sardonyx.
