Historian Shares Marietta Letters from Civil War Era

Brad Quinlan's lecture at the Marietta Museum of History today tops The 5 Things.

1. The Marietta Museum of History will sponsor "Evening with History" from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the museum as part of its 2011 Lecture Series.

Local Civil War historian Brad Quinlan will discuss and sign his new book Rest Brave Comrades: Your Work Is Done. Letters From the Marietta National Cemetery.

"Brown Bag Banters" and "Evening with History" events are a part of the annual Lecture Series at the museum. The events are free to members and $5 for non-members. For information or to make reservations, call 770-794-5710.

2. The Cobb chapter of is seeking volunteer drivers in Marietta and throughout the county. Every day, county Senior Services prepares more than 220 hot meals for homebound seniors. Volunteers deliver the meals and spend time with the seniors.

3.The Gridiron Club recently took the second place prize of $500.00 for participation in the Mableton Community Day. The event marks the club's effort to become more involved in the community and boost support of athletics at the high school.

4. For you recycling fiends, Keep Cobb Beautiful and the Cobb County Public Library are making it easy. In addition to four all-purpose recycling drop spots (for Marietta recyclers, the closest ones are at 4400 Lower Roswell Road and 2905 Library Lane), all county libraries accept single-use and rechargeable batteries for recycling. Keep it all out of the landfills!

5. Today is Bloomsday, a day fans of James Joyce's novel Ulysses celebrate in honor of the hour-by-hour recounting of a day in Dublin—specifically June 16, 1904—through the exploits of Leopold Bloom.
